  LETTER OF INTRODUCTION

Stendahl, Genoble, France

Teacher: Anne Boursier

Dear readers,
The Stendhal English section is pleased to participate for the fifth year in this interesting project. Our group is made up of 36 pupils from Mrs Boursier and Mrs de Gaudenzi's classes. The range of ages goes from twelve to fourteen. We live in a city called Grenoble which lies in the heart of the Alps.
The school which we attend, Stendhal, is situated in the town centre. It is named after a well-known French writer whose most famous work was "Le Rouge et le Noir". The main buildings are over three centuries old and the "Cour d'Honneur" (courtyard) is classified as a historical monument. At the top of the main stairway, there is also a beautiful sun clock painted on the walls. Our school is International because it welcomes children from all over the world. The children who are in the International section have language classes at a higher level than in regular French schools. There are three levels depending on how fluently the pupil speaks English, German, Spanish or Italian.
Grenoble is one of the few cities in the heart of the Alps. It is situated in a region called Le Dauphiné and has several historical monuments such as the Bastille, a fort at the top of one of the surrounding hills. In winter, the city is very busy because many tourists come from all round Europe to the surrounding ski resorts. In 1968 the Winter Olympics were held here.
Our town is also known for its regional specialities, which are walnuts, and gratin Dauphinois, a dish made with potatoes, cream and cheese.
In the centre of town there is a park, called Parc Paul Mistral, which is the place we are going to describe. The Olympic flame stands in the middle of it. In this park there is also an ice-skating rink, a track course and many other things you'll hear about in our description.
We hope you enjoy it.
