  LETTER OF INTRODUCTION

Washington Junior High School, Rock Island, Illinois

Teacher: Carolyn Tacey

Greetings to TOE participants.  We are 8th grade students at Washington Junior High School in Rock Island, Illinois, USA.  Our teacher is Mrs. Tacey and we are in her 5th period class.  There are 13 girls and 12 boys and most of the students in this class are 14 years old.
Washington Junior High is one of two junior highs in Rock Island.  We are the largest with approximately 600 students in the 7th and 8th grades at Washington.   Our school colors are red and black and we are called the Warriors.  The eighth grade is split into two teams.     We are the M.O.M. team, which means Masters of the Millennium.
Eighth graders are required to take math, American history, health, communications, English and gym.  Other classes that you can choose from are band, chorus, orchestra, technology, cooking, sewing, life  science, earth science, art andcomputers.  Our school day runs from 8:15-2:20, five days a week.   Currently we go to school from August to June but our district could possibly go year round in the near future. Our schools were air conditioned this summer.
Other activities that are offered at WJHS are football, cross country, track, basketball, cheerleading, volleyball, wrestling and tennis. Our girl's cross country team just took 1st in the conference and the boy's took third.  Students can also participate in clubs after school.  Clubs that are offered are drama, science, chess, Star Wars, newspaper, dance, ski and computer. Special after-school activities are the different  dances.  They usually occur around the different holidays. Our first dance is the Halloween Dance, which will be held Oct. 29. Everyone is looking forward to this because we can dress up in costumes. Awards are given for the best and scariest costumes. Rock Island is located on the Mississippi River, which is the largest river in the United States.  Another unique feature is the Rock Island Arsenal Island.   It is a military base where weapons are made and stored.  Rock Island has about 41,000 people.  We are called the Quad Cities when people talk about the surrounding cities of Moline, Davenport, and East Moline.
