White Pines State Park

Oregon High School, Oregon, Illinois

Teacher:  Jodi Thomas

White Pines State Park is located outside of Oregon, Illinois and is about 96 miles west of Chicago, Illinois.  It is made up of 385 beautiful, wooded acres.   Spring and Pine Creeks run through the scenic park.  People can enjoy fishing, picnicking, hiking, biking, and camping while visiting the park.  White Pines has many wonderful sights to see and experience.

The scenery at White Pines State Park is magnificent.  Although several trees are bare this time of year, some still have yellow, green, red, and orange leaves decoration them.  The trees howl when the cool, calm air blows through.  When hiking on the long trails, leaves can be seen falling in many directions.  As a trail of hikers walk through the wide, open lands, a loud crunch can be heard beneath their feet.   White Pines is covered with a blanket of bright green grass that shines brightly in the yellow sunlight.  The park wraps you in a blanket of beauty and serenity that you are unlikely to forget.

White Pines State Park has two creeks running through it.  The creeks are beautiful.  Fish shine in the water as the sun hits the creek.  The water is very shallow and it flows over a ford where the cars can drive and splash through it.   Calm, cold, clear creeks are fun to wade in with bare feet.  Some parts of the creeks are rough and dirty though.  People enjoy fishing, throwing rocks, and waking in the creeks. White Pines is blessed with several beautiful cliffs.  The cliffs are about 40 feet tall.  Some are bigger, some are smaller,  The cliffs have various shades of gray and brown in the stone, and they are very rough and rugged.  Some of the cliffs hold very clean ad cold spring water.  During the summer, kids and teenagers go to a certain cliff that we can jump off of into a very deep pond.  This cliff is about 30 feet high.  The cliffs are a magnificent sight to see. Many different animals can be seen at White Pines State Park. Deer can be seen while walking on the many trails leaping through the forest.  Birds flying from tree to tree to find food for their young is another example of the wildlife in the park.  Squirrels can be seen running around finding food for the winter.  In addition, fish swim gracefully through the water.  Raccoons fish for dinner in the creeks in the park.

White Pines State Park has many recreational areas.  Several playground are scattered throughout the park for children's enjoyment. Active people can take advantage of the various baseball diamonds and large, open, grassy areas.  The smell of hamburgers cooking on grills floats through the air while people enjoy several activities during their day at the park.

White Pines State Park is a wonderful place to visit.  The many sights will make you want to come back to experience the beauty of each season of the year.  Your senses will go wild as you take in the splendid scenery.
