Virtual China Scouting Trip

For the April 1998 trek

Day #2

February 26, 1998

Plans are underway for this year's Virtual China trek by the 7th graders from Hong Kong International School in Hong Kong, China. The trekker's will be sharing with KIDPROJ kids electronically on these web pages and the KIDPROJ forum. Stay tuned for the final plans!

This report comes from Jim Zahn as the teachers scout out the routes for this year's bikers and tourists. Take a look at previous trips to get a taste of what's coming.

Road Our inspections today took us down a road southwest of Longshan, a road which none of our groups has been on in the approximately 8 years this study trip has been conducted. In fact this segment of our scout trip would have to rate as one of my all-time favorites. It has apparently been twenty kilometers of a raging stream coming out of the mountains, and showed us absolutely beautiful examples of terracing as we made a gentle climb into the surrounding mountains. Along the way we also passed a reservoir which provided a beautiful background for the terraced rice paddies dotting both sides of the river. Although the river today was only a stream there was evidence that this stream becomes a raging torrent at the height of the rainy season. Boulders of all sizes dot the bed of the stream which measures 75 yards at its widest. Since the road we were on ended abruptly after 21 kilometers this stretch of highway would be absolutely wonderful for biking with groups of 7th grade students.

At the end of the afternoon we found ourselves at the Peninsula Hotel in Kaiping, a newly constructed hotel on an island in the river which passes through Kaiping. This 25 story hotel has all the amenities one would expect of a newly constructed hotel, except for the fact that it does not have a central heating system. It does, however, have a central air conditioning system.

Late in the afternoon our group of three met with the other three group leaders and we mapped out potential routes so each of the three groups of 25 students each week would travel along the rural country roads of Southern Guangdong Province separately as much as possible. All group leaders agree that this year's potential biking segments represent the best collection of opportunities available for the bike groups in the past eight years.

Cooks

A shot of the ladies working in the kitchen in a town along that 21 kilometer stretch of road.

We have one more half-day to visit factories and other points of interest as we construct the plans for the April trips to China. It should prove to be a very interesting trip for our students.
