Interview in the Dumpling restaurant

April 21, 1998

Today I woke up like yesterday and as everyday. After that, I had breakfast and started our day. We started toward to the Shaanxi History Museum. After that we started to walk to the Big Goose Pagoda.

While we were walking towards the Big Goose Pagoda, Mrs. Pushkarna suggested me to interview the people in the Dumpling Restaurant. But because I don't know how to speak mandarin, I had to have Alex, Lowell and Derek to help me communicate. In the restaurant, we interviewed the man who made the dumplings. His name was Wai.

Us: What are usually filled in the dumplings?

Wai: It is usually filled with meat or vegetable

Us: How and how long does it have to cook?

Wai: To cook it you have to steam it for two hours

Us: How much do you sell a day?

Wai: We sell 20 baskets of dumplings a day

After we interviewed Wai, I also interviewed the store manager Tam. We had a talk with him.

Us: Is it hard to open a shop like this one?

Tam: No, it isn't very hard

Us: How long do you work for a day?

Tam: We work for 24 hours.

Us: What is the most popular food there?

Tam: Dumplings and noodles

Us: Which one is better selling?

Tam: It's about the same

Us: When is the most popular time?

Tam: Lunch and Dinner

Us: How many people work here?

Tam: 6 people

Us: What else do you make apart from dumplings?

Tam: Noodles and buns

Actually I think they are pitiful that they have to work all day. But for all I think their work is worth because I think the food that they make are very good.

The heat in Xian is unbearable. Mr. Lane has to come now! We are right now at the outside of the Big Goose Pagoda. This place is full of very interesting shops. Khurram and I had our pictures taken and put it on a thousand dollar cloth! Our group, Miss Shao and Mrs. Liang's group all went to a nearby restaurant to get a bite to eat. I had a dumpling noodle. It was delicious. Mrs. Liang said that the dumplings were all made Shaanxi style. I never got to finish the noodles but I ate half of it. It still made me full. After the food, we all continued back to the pagoda. Mr. Lane was finally here and without him, we couldn't go into the pagoda. Mrs. Pushkarna suggested that we go on one of those motorcycles with seating in it. It was very fun and we were able to get there faster than the rest of the other groups. Lowell paid him and we gave him a Polaroid of himself. One onlooker asked for a photo too. We agreed. It was a good thing that there wasn't a line of people asking for photos!

We finally got to the pagoda. I just can't believe that a building that high would still be up after so many years. They must have preserved it pretty well. There was a wall on the outside and then the pagoda was inside. It is a very large place. The layout shows that the person who built this place was wealthy. A family there asked me to take a picture of them with their camera. It was strange to take a picture for someone. I thought that at first that the people were afraid of us since they kept on starring at us. I thought that the ones that who sold things to us just wanted to make money. But now I know that I am wrong. Others climbed the pagoda but I didn't. I had to write up the draft of this! Then we returned to the Bell Tower Hotel. I keep on calling it "home!" It's a weird habit. The rest at the hotel is always the best of all in the whole day! After the rest, our group took the walk to the Muslim section of the city. The walk was short but the heat and dust outside was pretty bad. We went through the Muslim market and got to the mosque. It is a Muslim mosque but the design of the temple is very Chinese. I asked the manager why it was so. He said that it was because there used to be Muslim's that worked in high places in the government. An earthquake took down their old temple. Some wealthy Chinese helped the Muslim's rebuild their temples. Since they didn't really know how their mosques really looked like, they just built something for them. Khurram was able to enter the prayer room because he was Muslim. He bought two hats that they wear. We took a walk through the market. I only bought a teapot for my mom. Mr. Lane had said that we would not be able to hold on to our cash while we were in the Muslim market. But that didn't apply for me! The return to the hotel was next. We then went to eat at Kentucky Fried Chicken. I felt more to home than usual! Walking back to the hotel was next. It was then that I noticed a lot of hawkers on the street. Khurram and I bought some sunglasses. We all took a bus to watch a Tang dynasty performance. It was very interesting. The clothing was very pretty and the actors were talented. But the problem was that you could tell that they weren't really singing or playing an instrument. I thought they could improve on that spot. Well, my day is completed and it's the bed for me!
