Day 1

Itinerary

Written by: Chris Hodge and Ryan LeMond (and Miss Pfeiffer!)

We started our China Adventure at 8:30 a.m. as we left port in Hong Kong aboard a ferry headed for Gong Yi. After an exciting 4.5 hour trip and another hour through Immigration we boarded a bus and headed out of town. While in the middle of singing D.I.S.C.O. our bus was nearly hit broadside by a big truck! It was so close the mirror tapped the window of our bus. Nobody was hurt!

We bussed another 30 minutes to a small town called Yuenshan where our bikes were waiting for us. Many of us bought ponchos before we finally met our bikes and repaired them for the journey. We enthusiastically started down the road and turned off into the first village we found. We talked with several older men who were smoking a huge pipe that was really nothing more than a normal cigarette! (see the interview by Philbert and Gary as they interviewed these men!) We walked around the village for a while before leaving.

Back on the main road we biked for a long, long time! We finally decided to explore a very wet and muddy road, thanks to our fearless leader Gary Fisher! We saw a village at the end of this muddy road that was about 15 kilometers off - we didn't make it that far! We turned around and headed back to the main road falling into mud puddles along the way - see our picture! ). It rained periodically throughout the trip and we got a chance to wear our new rain gear.

After a little more biking (about 22 km in all) we reached Zhaiwu where we boarded our bus and went to the Peninsula Hotel in Kai Ping. It took a while, but we were all finally clean and dry!
