The Shaanxi Province city of Xi'an, China (approx. 1,425 km NNW of Hong
Kong and 925 km SW of Beijing) has been a political and cultural capital of
China for 1,000 years! It was the capital of China during the Zhou, Qin, Han,
Sui and Jang Dynasties, from the eighth century B.C. until the tenth century
A.D. Having played a major role in the development of Chinese culture, Xi'an
has much to offer students on a study tour.
Xi'an's impressive, Ming Dynasty 14th century wall still stands
intact. With a perimeter of almost 14 kilometers, it is perhaps the most
important city wall in China today. The wall is 12 meters (39 feet) high,
averages a width of 15 meters (49 feet), and is almost entirely surrounded by a
moat.
While the modern city of Xi'an has expanded outside the walled city, much of it still bears the flavor of traditional China. History is so abundant in the Xi'an area that magnificent archaeological discoveries are made every year.
Our five days in Xi'an will be spent visiting sites of historical importance including the Shaanxi History Museum, the Tang Dynasty Big Goose Pagoda, the 14th Century Great Mosque, the Temple of the City God, long sections of the city wall, and the Ching Dynasty's "Scholars Street". Probably the biggest highlight of the trip will be our visit to what is said by many to be the "Eighth Wonder of the World", the Qin Terracotta Warriors Museum.
Besides historical sites, we will also make study visits to a factory, a rural village, and a local middle school. Students, in small groups, will make frequent walking tours of sections of the city, making contact with the people of Xi'an.
Round trip air transport will be by Dragon Airlines. Only a few site visits will be by tour bus, as an emphasis will be placed on small study group walks to many of the above sites. A willingness to experience and try new things will be expected of all participants.
Hotel accommodations will be at a family-style, comfortable hotel within the old city walls. There will be one adult supervisor for each study group of six students. A nurse will accompany the group throughout the trip.
We are confident that this trip option will both immerse the HKIS 7th graders in Chinese life and deepen their understanding of Chinese history and culture. We hope that the information we share with you will help you with your understanding of Chinese history, culture, and way of life.
Length of trip: Five days and four nights. Cost: HK$ 8,300 (Approx. US$ 1,075)
