CHINA BIKING STUDY TOUR

(description)
Trip 1: April 6-11, 1997
Trip 2: April 13-18, 1997

Tour Map of China
The Biking Trip gives students a close up view of rural Southern China as they bike from Kwang Hai on the coast (about 160 km southwest of Hong Kong) to Siuhing (Zhaoqing), about 150 km due north of Kwang Hai and 100 km due west of Guangzhou (Canton). Students will cycle approximately 40 km each day. A ten speed mountain bike is provided for each student. During the day students stop frequently to visit villages, schools, factories and to take pictures of points of interest. Evening accommodations are in modern China Travel Service Hotels.

Safety is always of primary importance. Students are required to attend three pre-trip conditioning rides where we work on safety and proper bike usage. Helmets are compulsory for all cyclists. Each group is led by staff who have prior experience on the roads that we will be using. There is one adult supervi sor for each 5-6 students. The parent supervisors are trained in proper group riding procedures. A nurse also accompanies each biking group. While cycling, each bike group is accompanied by both a bus and a lorry (truck). The bus and lorry are used to carry the luggage and transport the whole group if we encounter unfavorable biking conditions.

This trip requires a commitment to participate in three of four conditioning rides on Saturday mornings preceding the trip. If a student does not fulfil this commitment, they are not able to participate on the biking trip.

We believe that this trip offers an outstanding opportunity to experience rural China and learn more about its land, people and the culture. Students need not be marathon bikers, they simply need to be in reasonable shape. It helps to have a good attitude and a willingness to participate in something that might be termed "an adventure", as no two trips are ever exactly alike.

Length of trip: Six days and five nights Cost: HK$ 5,900 ($1 US = Approx. HK$ 7.73)
