Biking Study Tour Itinerary

Biking Students '96
[Trip "A"][Trip "B"]
As we bike we will be sending daily written messages and digital images to students around the world. We'll try our best to share the sights, sounds, and smells of our journey. Thanks to AT&T we have what we believe is a reliable method of communicating as we travel. We certainly are excited and hope you can join us.

As a result of a scouting trip on February 26th - 28th the itineraries for the HKIS 7th grade bike groups that will be travelling the weeks of April 6th and April 13th have been significantly modified. Below you will see two itineraries. This year's plan is more of a "hub of a wheel" experience, with HKIS bikers spending three nights in Taishan, branching out in several directions during the day, only to return to Taishan in the evening. The two biking itineraries will cover essentially the same routes but in a different order. Group "A" will initially head south, and Group "B" will go north. Their journeys will cross paths about half-way through the trips.

Hong Kong International School, Bike Trip "A" Itinerary

Mr. Fischer's Group: April 7th
Mr. Koester's Group: April 14th

Monday: April 7th and 14th:

Depart from the Repulse Bay campus of HKIS at 6:00 a.m. for the China Ferry Terminal in Kowloon, across the harbor from the city of Hong Kong. Travel by high speed ferry and arrive in Kai Ping about 150 - 200 miles west of Hong Kong at approximately noon. Eat sack lunches on the Ferry. Bike through Kai Ping and take a leisurely 19 km ride south to the city of Taishan, making several stops to visit points of interest along the way.

Tuesday: April 8th and 15th:

After a 6:15 wake up and breakfast we'll start off for a full day of biking along the rural roads south and Southeast of Taishan, toward the small city of Duhu. Numerous small villages branch off a lovely tree-lined road and will provide endless opportunities to stop and visit. Box lunch provided. Late in the afternoon we'll bus back to Taishan to clean up, eat dinner, debrief, and do our Virtual China writing.

Wednesday: April 9th and 16th:

Another full day of biking awaits us as we awake at 6:30 a.m. Numerous interviews and visits to small villages will occur along the road south toward Ding Gong (erroneously know to us before as "Nam Bak Ahn"), a quaint little village with a lovely town square lined with wonderfully ornate two and three story Chinese buildings. We may even get as far south as Kong Hoi (Kwang Hai) on the coast. In the late afternoon we will bus back to Taishan, clean up, and after dinner do our annual visit of the Wu Xi Middle School. After our 10:00 p.m. return to the hotel we will do our journal and Virtual China writing.

Thursday: April 10th and 17th:

Today we will spend the morning exploring the city of Taishan including a wonderful meat, vegetable, and animal market not far from our hotel. We'll also visit a small factory, possibly a Christian church, and as usual discover one or two other surprise locations which we will not have planned for. After a lunch in a lakeside restaurant near our hotel we will take a leisurely bike ride to Kai Ping (our original port of entry) to the north of Taishan. Clean up, dinner, writing and relaxing await us after our 5:00 p.m. arrival at the very nice Hotel Holiday Sanb on the river front in the city of Kai Ping.

Friday: April 11th and 18th:

After our normal 7:15-7:30 breakfast we will board a bus for the short ride to a visit of a joint venture American/Chinese factory which makes fiber for tires and conveyor belts. After our tour of the factory we will bus about 22 km north of Kai Ping before we mount up for about 35 km of wonderful biking towards Sunhing. 6:00 p.m. will find us arriving in Longshan at the Longshan Foreign Merchants Hotel, where we will be sure to reserve room 206 since that is the only guest room outside of the business office that has a telecommunications connection for us to use. From 6:00 - 10:00 p.m. we will do our normal evening activities, sharing our day's experiences and graphics through our connection in room 206.

Saturday: April 12th and 19th:

After breakfast and packing we will bus directly to Suihing and take a morning foot tour of the Seven Star Crags Park on the outskirts of the city. After lunch we will depart from the ferry terminal in Suihing and board the 2:00 p.m. ferry back to Hong Kong.

Hong Kong International School, Bike Trip "B" Itinerary

Mrs. Crouch's Group: April 7th
Mrs. Lewis' Group: April 14th

Monday: April 7th and 14th:

Depart from the Repulse Bay campus of HKIS at 6:00 a.m. for the China Ferry Terminal in Kowloon, across the harbor from the city of Hong Kong. Travel by high speed ferry and arrive in Kai Ping about 150 - 200 miles west of Hong Kong at approximately 12:30. Jump on a bus for a 20 km ride north of Kai Ping. Off load the bikes and ride approximately 35 kilometers in the direction of Sunhing, making several stops to visit villages, cottage industries, and schools along the way. Spend the night in Longshan at the Foreign Merchants Hotel.

Tuesday: April 8th and 15th:

Drying FishAfter a 6:15 wake up and breakfast we'll visit a local Buddhist Temple, then begin a 12 km ride from Longshan back toward Sunhing, a route which we will have bussed the previous evening. Along the way we will have a chance to see a factory which makes stainless steel cookware, more small villages, a shrimp farm, and if we're lucky a snake farm. As we enter the city of Sunhing we will be able to visit a street market as well as numerous "fish- drying" operations along the banks of the river on the south side of the city. Lunch will be had at a Sunhing restaurant, after which we'll load the bikes on the truck and we'll bus about 15 km south of Sunhing on our way back to Kai Ping. The 35 km ride will bring us within 15 km of Kai Ping which we will travel by bus. Then we'll do the normal clean up, eat dinner, debrief, and write our Virtual China messages for you.

Wednesday: April 9th and 16th:

Gold BuddhaHaving stayed overnight at the Hotel Holiday Sanbu, on the river front of Kai Ping we'll have only a short walk or quick bus ride to a joint venture American/Chinese factory which makes fiber for use in tires and belts. Nearby we may also visit a cookie factory, one of the favorite stops of previous bikers' visits. You can guess why. Early in the afternoon we'll hop on the bikes and make a relatively easy 12 km ride to Taishan, eating lunch along the way. The short distance allows us to spend significant time exploring villages and roads along the way. After cleaning up and having dinner Mrs. Crouch's group will hop the bus for a visit to Wu Xi Middle School. This has become an annual event between our two schools. After our 10:00 p.m. return to the hotel we will do our journal and Virtual China writing. Our friends from Biking Group "A" will be staying in the hotel with us as our paths cross today.

Thursday: April 10th and 17th:

ClassToday all of us will spend the morning exploring the city of Taishan including a wonderful meat, vegetable, and animal market not far from our hotel. We'll also visit a small factory, possibly a Christian church, and as usual one or two other surprise locations which we will not have necessarily planned for. Mrs. Lewis' group will visit "No. 1 Elementary School" about three blocks from our hotel at 9:00 a.m. After a lunch at a lakeside restaurant near our hotel we will take a bike ride south toward the coastal city of Kwang Hai (Kong Hoi). We may not have time to get all the way down to Kwang Hai about 50 km away, but we'll get at least as far as the village of Ding Gong which in previous years we always thought was Nam Bak Ahn. After visiting Ding Gong and its exquisite architecture around the town square we'll board a bus for a late afternoon ride back to Taishan. We may have some time to explore the city of Taishan by foot after dinner. Clean up and writing await us at the close of the day.

Friday: April 11th and 18th:

Snake LadyAfter our normal 7:15-7:30 breakfast we will start the best biking day of our trip as we head in a south-easterly direction from Taishan toward the village of Duhu about 40 km away. The roads are great, not that heavily travelled, and lined with trees which combined with luscious green fields of rice and vegetables and small mountains on both sides makes for an absolutely beautiful journey. A late afternoon bus will take us bake to Taishan for the last of our three nights' stay in that city. From 6:00 - 10:00 p.m. we will do our normal evening writing activities, sharing our day's experiences and their digital images with students around the world.

Saturday: April 12th and 19th:

Return FerryAfter breakfast and packing we will bike 22 km back to Kai Ping in time to board the 1:00 p.m. high speed ferry back to Hong Kong. Four hours later we'll be back at the China Ferry Terminal in Hong Kong and after cleaning our bikes back at the school we'll be in our own beds perhaps as early as 7:30 that night after an exhausting but exhilarating week of travelling the country roads of Southern China. We hope you will have enjoyed the trip with us.
