Virtual China Bikers Group #4 Interviews ---------------------------------------- Virtual China, Bikers Group 4 ...... traveling from Siu Hing toward Sun Hing in Southern China along country roads. This is the first of several sets of messages to come from Group 4 as they bike along their route over rural country roads. The date is Tuesday, March 26th, 1996. The messages below are from the 7th grade students from Hong Kong International School as they bike through this area. ---------------------------------------- Author: Clara Ho and Stephanie Ko Editor: Miss Pfeiffer Date:26/3/96 Location: The Song Tao Hotel, Siu Hing, China Activity: Interview with Liu Chiu Ling, Song Tao Hotel Receptionist Message: Liu Chiu Ling works as the Song Tao Hotel receptionist. She has been working there for over a year now. She has been working there for a little over a year now. She said that the hotel has existed for over 10 years now. She likes her job, as her experience over the past year as a receptionist. Each month, she gets four days of vacation, and prefers to visit her family of six. She works dutifully 7 days a week. Liu likes living in China, but would like to visit other places like Australia and Canada. She likes living in China because she is used to the lifestyle. She is in her late 20's to early 30's. She is a hard worker and seems to enjoy life as it is. She seems humble proof to the question of, "What would you do if you had 10,000,000?" She answered, "I don't know, it's not in my hand." She seemed like a very down to earth, nice person, and so willing to answer our questions. ---------------------------------------- Virtual China Readers! ( From Bikers Group 4, Mrs. Lewis' group...... March 27th, 1996 ...... day 3 of their trip ) Near the city of Sun Hing .... probably about 130-150 km inland from the South China coast. The following messages come to you from the Hong Kong International School 7th grade students who are biking from Siu Hing to Kwang Hai, China as part of their study tour of that country. This is the third day they have been traveling. Today's trip will take them from Long Shan, where they spent the night ...... to Hoi Ping, a distance of approximately 30-40 km as they travel south. ---------------------------------------------------- Author: Katie Hartigon Date: March 27, 1996 Location: Hotel in a small village called Long Shan, China. Activity: Interview with Eduardo Agusto dos Remedos Message: Today when we arrived at the hotel in Long Chan. Eduardo Agusto dos Remedos , who is our bike leader. He is 28 years old. He has done this biking trip with HKIS for 5 years, Eduardo believes that the kids on the trip last year were the most polite. In his point of view China has changed dramatically. Fields have disappeared and more and more factories and high rises have sprouted up, an some of the roads have changed direction. "I get paid", he claimed, "but I don't know how much I get because Ian hasn't told me yet". Ian is the bike man who supplies the bikes for our trip. The messages below are from the 7th grade students from Hong Kong International School as they bike through this area. ---------------------------------------- Author: Divya Daryanani Date: March 28, 1996 Location: Approaching Kwang Hai, on the southern coast of China Interview of: Teacher at a school in a village Today we met teacher Yu, a teacher at a school in a village. Then we interviewed her. We first asked her what she thought of the school. She said she thought it was very small. Teacher Yu said she taught 6th grade which consisted of 13-15 year olds. She also said teaching was a very tough job. We asked her what the tuition was for the school. she said it was about $300 HK per semester. (7.73 HK$ = 1 US$). Next we asked her what kind of subjects she taught. She taught math and Chinese Literature to the 6th grade. The other classes taught at the school were Art, Geography, History, Science, and Music. On Mondays, the school has a national flag ceremony in which students and teachers are required to wear uniform. Other days are optional for uniforms. Teacher Yu seemed like a very happy person despite all the work she has to go through every day. She may not be rich, but it seems to us that she can enjoy life and find the good things at every angle in life. ----------------------------------------------------- Virtual China .... March 29th, 1996 (Last messages from Bikers Group 4) Mrs. Lewis' group traveling north to south in Southern China. Today bikers group 4 rode their bikes from Hoi Ping to Tai Shan in Southern China. Tomorrow they will ride the final 30-35 km from Tai Shan to Kwang Hai, on the coast, and board a high speed ferry bound for Hong Kong. ------------------------------------------------------- Author: Arun Jolly Date: March 29th, 1996 Location: Tai Shan Overseas Chinese Hotel (room 201) Activity: Interview with Mr. Frank Ko Message: Mr. Frank Ko Age: 45 Occupation: Chemical Engineer Location: Arun's hotel room Mr. Ko came to China 4 years ago when his son was in 7th grade. This time he wanted to experience the trip with his daughter. He enjoys the culture of China, interaction with students, and the beautiful scenery. He dislikes the rainy weather. He prefers to come in November when the weather is much nicer. He has lived in China for 2 years. He worked on a joint venture in Ningbo, China. He noticed there are a lot more business developments, and the food has gotten a lot better. there was also more traffic and the drivers are not polite. the hotels have also deteriorated. From this trip and his son's trip he notices the different students and their behavior. Also, Virtual China '96 was not around 4 years ago.
