Virtual China - Description of Xi'an Signs
----------------------------------------
From: Christine Manville
Subject: Virtual China 96

My name is Christine Manville, I am one of the group leaders in Virtual
China Xi'an trip week # 1. After a most interesting and knowledgeable week
we came home yesterday. Being Chinese myself, I can read and understand
lots of signs, quotes in Xi'an, which I like to share with you. Some of
them can be rather interesting, if translated from word to word (for those
I would put in the meaning), also by reading it, I hope will help you to
get a better picture of the culture and peoples' life there. Xi'an is only
2 hours and 45 minutes flying time away from Hong Kong.

These are neon lights in cities, shop signs, quotes in villages and busy
parts of town.

Here they are:

Control populationg, upgrade quality of our people. Unify, exchange and
friendship.
Safe speed driving.
We are delighted to see friends coming from all directions of the world.
First stop, second look, third pass through (this is on a very vey busy
road cross section, where at one point something like 10 cars, 20 bikes 50
people trying to cross the road at the same time). People has only one
globe, it is every body's responsibility to control population.

According to laws, 6 years education (this is found on a wall in a rural
village, I presume China is promoting the first 6 years free education
among farmers, where farming comes before education).
Strong quality inside, build image outside (this is on a wall outside a
factory, at that time I was on a bus and was unable to find out the
meaning.)
Treasure our enviroment, plan your birth life (this is from word to word)
Comrades, thank you for your hard work today (this is on the exit of a
factory we visited)
Safety precaution is our treasure, do not waste your life (find in a factory)

by the road with a few telephones, and somebody is running it, instead of
phone booth with telephone cards).

Dancing parlour.
Space Ballroom dancing hall. (must be a lot of Fred Astairs in Xi'an, as I
see lots and lots of these dancing hall signs)
Air conditioning available.
Friend all over the world, welcome you to Xi'an.
Riding on line is strictly prohibited (this is on a highway with only two
lanes, which means no overtaking)
Seeds and farming medicine for sale( farming medicine means fertilizers and
pesticide).
Darkie toothpaste.
Darkie Peppermint (I can't help but bought half a dozen to show folks at
home, have not taste it yet).
Dumpling shops.
Guess department (this actually mean hotel or guess house)
Snack department (this means a snack shop)
Porceline factory.
