VIRTUAL CHINA '96 - Bikers Day 2

The following messages were sent from Southern China by Mr. Dan Fischer's
biking group, a group of about 30 students and chaperones from Hong Kong
International School conducting a week-long study tour of Southern China.
The group actually traveled the week of March 18th-22nd. This was day 2 of
their trip. We had some problems getting the information.

Morning Itinerary .... 1st day of the study tour
Location- Tai Shan .... 20 miles north of the coast

It was a fun morning for most. Everyone arrived at the school at 5:50 am,
and left by bus to the ferry terminal. We boarded a hydrofoil at 8:30am for
a 4 and a half hour long trip to Kong Hoi. Normally the trip takes just 3
hours, but it was extremely foggy and the South China Sea was quite rough.
So we took a detour up the Pearl River. It was spooky, a ship just appeared
out of nowhere. It seemed so dangerous. Even though it was longer, the
detour ensured our safety. To relieve boredom, we watched movies in the
ferry. The first was a Kung Fu movie entitled, " Pick Pocket Me Please."
The second was a very funny comedy entitled, "Happy Ghost." The movies
were
great and relieved us from boredom.

In the morning we got a wake up call at about 6:15 a.m. It took us a long
time to get up and be ready and be downstairs at 7:30 a.m. for breakfast.
For breakfast we had a variety of dimsum- sweet soybean soup, dumplings and
chai siu pau. After that we went to the city of Tai Shan. Tai Shan is a
small city by China standards, population of only 140,000. We went to a
market where we saw many different kinds of animals being sold including
rats, raccoons, snakes, and gerbils. The smell from the animals was
unbearable. After we left I saw some switch blades and swords which I
wanted to buy very much.
After that we visited an elementary school. We were very welcomed by the
students and teachers. We went up to a 6th grade classroom where English
was being taught. There were 54 students in a room which is a little bit
bigger than my bedroom. Whenever they said something they said it in unison
which made it unbearably loud! We had to leave quickly because we had to
get back for lunch.

Morning Itinerary

Hello. My name is Bryan Lucas and I live in Repulse Bay, Hong
Kong. I am in 7th grade and am having fun biking in China. Here is a
description of what we have done this morning.
When we woke up we quickly put our clothes on, and ran downstairs
for breakfast. For breakfast we had eggs, noodles, and delicious soup.
As we packed our bags, we thought of the upcoming day. We dragged our
suitcases down 4 floors, and broke our backs. Everyone loaded the bus
and crammed into the small, tight seats. As we left the hotel we prayed
it wouldn't rain. Will, the bike man, ate peanuts and the floor of the
bus became dirtier than a pig. Some people fell asleep and some people
played cards. Others looked at the scenery, while others became bored.
The road turned into a dirt path and everyone was startled. As we paid
to drive on the highway we stopped and went into a Buddhist monastery.
Here the 6 Buddahs spent their lives and worshipped. We burnt incense
and made wishes. We bought fireworks and set them off. The noise was
incredible. Ear piercing was more like it. We hopped onto the bus and
headed for lunch. We all ate at a local restaurant. Flies bothered
everybody and some people tried to catch them with their chopsticks. As
lunch passed, everyone relaxed and the day continued on.

Afternoon Itinerary

After lunch we unloaded our bikes to prepare for the 30 km trip
ahead. After everyone was ready we started on the trip. We passed many
people and they all said Hi! When we got to a village we visited a
school. It was quite nice. I even saw a lady that was moved into this
village just to marry. She was sixteen years old. When we finished
that, we soon took off riding to a meeting point with the other group.
When we came to the point, we started to bike again. We biked as if we
were gliding on jet skis. We biked further and further down the road
until we got to a gas station. We bought many snacks and took a long
break. After the break, we loaded up our bikes and got on the bus. The
bus ride was very long. After we got to the hotel, we ate dinner. After
dinner we went to a street market. We walked along for an hour. I
bought one thing but my friends bought many things. Then we came home
and started on our Virtual China writing, and that's it!
