KIDPROJ Webguide | Home

Thank you for your interest in volunteering to work with the KIDPROJ Team as a volunteer! KIDPROJ couldn't run without many hands working together.

Volunteers are needed in several areas so check the list of things and take your pick!

The most visible area is web page coding. Many classrooms are using the web pages as they participate in projects so that means getting the pages up as quickly as possible both prior to and during each project. Check out the Task list and just email:

KIDPROJ Webguide

It seems to work best if one volunteer can take a project  to code from start to finish. Sometimes coders work in teams but never fear there is always help available to answer questions from the KIDPROJ Team.

The basic Kidlink Webguide will give the most complete information about creating web pages for KIDPROJ. Below is a description of those things that are essential to the KIDPROJ section of Kidlink.

KIDLINK  and KIDPROJ essentials:

  1. Content is the announcement of the project and the work of the kids with appropriate links back and forth. The name of the school along with city/country should be included so people can find their work.
  2. Graphics that the moderator sends you can also be included. Just keep page loading time in mind when writing pages. Several pages may be better than one.
  3. Exact directions for subscribing to the KIDPROJ list if it is not in the announcement with a link to our "Getting Started" page called quick.html.
  4. Date of creation and/or date of modification. Your name as coder can be added with an email link for questions.
  5. A footer with copyright information
  6. Link to Kidlink homepage - http://www.kidlink.org/
  7. dirinfo.html file listing contents of your directory:

How To

Email Diane to volunteer and get set up with a username and password for FTP and a directory in the Under Construction directory of KIDPROJ.

Please plan to communicate with the project moderator concerning your need for information. Sometimes moderators have a "picture" of the web pages in mind, sometimes not. If this project has run in prior years those web pages may give ideas for setting up the site. Request that graphics be sent directly to your email address.Subscribing to KIDPROJ is the easiest way to "harvest" the kid's work during a project. Messages can also be retrieved from "listserv" with a "search" command.

  1. Download the handy template or "View Source" to copy the source code for the footer of this page. Buttons may be used for links if you prefer except the copyright statement which must be as coded
  2. FTP to www.kidlink.org. Set the directory to /uc-docs/KIDPROJ/yourdirname
  3. Create a directory for the new project using a capital letter for the first letter of the directory name.
  4. The first page of your project should be named index.html
  5. Links should be relative whenever possible. Please provide links to "Quick Start" page, the previous year's project, and each page of the project site.
  6. Upload your newly created or revised web pages.
  7. Test them from the web: http://www-uconst.kidlink.org/KIDPROJ/Yourdirname/Project
  8. After checking links and testing, email Diane to have the pages copied to global.kidlink

Page enhancements

Two cgi scripts are available on KIDLINK to enhance pages.
  1. A Form Mail script for sending form results email to a moderator. See "Using Forms" below.
  2. A second Form Mail script that is really nice. Here is a template to use for a form page using this script - formsample.html (recommended)
  3. A text counter to keep track of "hits" to a page.
    1. Add this line to page where you want the count to appear:                                                                   <!--#exec cgi="/cgi-bin/counter.cgi"-->
    2. Name the page with the extension:   .shtml
  4. JAVA may be used or animated .gifs
  5. For assistance or other enhancements contact Diane Smith at dianes@halcyon.com.
