Virtual Sumatra

The fifth in a series of letters from students on a hiking trip through the rainforest in Sumatra.

This will probably be the last message since they leave for Lake Toba tomorrow. If another one does come through I will post it. (Chris)

"We did the volcano climb today -- it was a gorgeous day -- no rain and clear at the top. The road has been improved so, although it was strenuous, everyone made it to the top. We did some serious shopping at the Berastagi market and the kids bought neat loot. The trip has been great so far -- some big rainstorms in Bukit Lawang that knocked power out, but cool in the highlands. Tomorrow we go to Linga village and Lake Toba." (Bill Cason)

"Played nine holes on the volcano, actually only one. It's all on video! We hit golf balls into the caldera, first time in Mt. Sibayak history. We're famous, wheee!" (Mike Gordon)

"Hi! MDD and Shamo. Today I climbed the active volcano, Sibayak. I made it all the way to the top. It was nice and cool at the top, a change from the usual humidity." (Daisy)

"The volcano was cool. We hiked to the top of the crater and hit golf balls. The sulfur vents smelled really bad. I had a lot of fun." (Brock)

"Hi mom and dad, this trip is really fun. I think it was a good choice. I think everybody should go on it. Anyway, we climbed a volcano today. It was fun. Bye for now." (Colin)

"Today I climbed Mount Sibayak, it was really fun. The weather at the top was very cool. It felt really cool when you finally made it to the top. It was a relief, actually. This was a once in a life time experience." (Shamez)

"Today we climbed Mt. Sibayak, and raw sulfur vents. We went shopping and I bought a mask for less than half price." (Robert)

"Hi mom and dad, today we climbed Mount Sibayak. The first part was the hardest. We got to the top after about 2 1/2 hours and it smelled really bad, it smelled like rotten eggs. There were really big vents spraying out sulfur. We made the word DHAHRAN out of rocks. The climb down was hard also. I really hurt my knees. When we finally got to the bus I was really relieved. Then we went shopping." (Tyler)
