Virtual Sumatra

This the third in a series of letters from students on a hiking trip through the rainforest in Sumatra.

Rafting was today (4-24) -- river was running due to a HUGE storm last night. Great rapids, no one tossed out. Everyone is doing well -- Andrew summed it up saying "This is surreal - it's like I'm not here, like a dream." Tonight we are having a talk with a volunteer from the Orangutan Center who has worked here four years. Later we will do a little Karaoke and tomorrow we visit the crocodile farm and head for the highlands of Berastagi. Volcano climb is the last hardship! Bill Cason

All is going well. We lucked out as the rains came the night after we camped. Development in this area continues to tax the Bohorok River. Saw lots of primates. (Mike Gordon)

"Today was fun. We went white water rafting and it was very fun." (Jordon)

"White water rafting is excellent. It had some pretty cool rapids. I think everyone should go on this trip." (Colin)

"The river water was cold." (Brock)

"The river was muddy." (Andrew)

Me and Brock tried to fish in the river but all we caught was a big log." (Justin)

"Hi D.J.D. and Shamo. I love this trip. It's tropical paradise. Today we went white water rafting. I earned my name of Dunken Daisy because I fell in the water so much." (Daisy)

"Today was pretty fun, but the fun part of white water rafting was the first rapid and the spring." (Jessica)
