Virtual Sumatra
The first letters from students on a hiking trip through the rainforest in Sumatra.
Hello everyone! It was a genuine Garuda Awakening, but we made it!
The good news was we all had Super Tourist class seats, which was like business class. The
not-so-good was we left Dhahran one hour late and were in Jeddah almost 2 hours! We got to
Jakarta with half hour to spare to make our connections to Medan. Of course that flight
stopped at Batan Island on the way which delayed us another hour. We got to our hotel at
11 PM and slept in until 8 AM. We tubed the river in the morning and visited the Orang
Center this afternoon. Everyone feels fine and is doing great and having fun. Here are a
few stories, mostly true...
This trip is the best. We went tube rafting down a river then went to the orangutan center
which was interesting. Bye (Colin)
I thought the river tubing was fun. The orangutan center however I thought I could have
used an extra shirt due to the extreme temperature and humidity (Brock)
Our group went tubing and hiking. The tubing was fun but I can sum up the hiking in 3
words-- IT WAS HOT!! (Andrew)
I saw the saddest thing at the orang center. One of the orangs was supposed to go to the
wild and they shot a drugged blow dart at the orang and it looked dead, then they bagged
it and hauled it off like garbage. (Justin)
This trip is so cool! We went river tubing this morning, after a hot, bug biting night. I
have huge rashes up my arms from the rubber innertube, but it was worth it. It is raining
tonight, which should please everyone. I havent seen rain for a long time! (Lauren)
I have learned to look at things twice before you say anything because we always complain
about life (this was the end of the fax and it was cut off, so there is no name).
