From Saudi Arabia :-

Sumatra is a place that contains one of the most beautiful, and precious areas of the world, the rainforest. I selected this trip because it was different from all the other ones. Also, the rainforest is not going to be here much longer. I want to see it if it does disappear. This trip is a great opportunity for kids to learn about the rainforest, as well as to experience a cool trip.

I am Spencer J. I am going on a trip to the rain forest. I am male. I am 13.

I am going on this journey to learn what I don't know already about the rainforest. I am also going because the rain forests are showing a high sign of disappearing.

I am looking forward to trekking through almost uncharted land. I intend to go where no man has gone before.

I live in Saudi Arabia which you probably know, and NO I don't ride a camel to school. I enjoy living here because it gives me a chance to see places of historical greatness. I have been to places which are hardly ever on the map.
Such as the Seychelles.

Hey you people! My title is Casey. I'm 13 and in the 7th grade in Junior High.

I was born here, Saudi Arabia, in October 1983. For you info, I am a boy, I think.

And I don't ride a camel to school and I don't have to travel a thousand miles to find water (it flows through the faucets and in the pools and hot tubs).

I am an American, from Texas. Some people call us Aramco Brats, but we're not spoiled, we don't get everything.

I have two cats, and a pond full of fish, frogs and turtles. In my spare time I like to rollerblade (I'm not good at all!) I mostly get A's in school.

The reason why I'm taking this trip is because it sounded fun and I wanted to learn more about the rain forest. And I also want to accomplish my 60th time in an air plane.

I hope to accomplish persuading many people to respect the rain forest through this trip. And also to see new places and share them with you.

Hi, my name is Chris. I live in the Dhahran, Saudi Arabia.

I'm 12 and in the 7th grade. It is like the USA because I live in a compound.

I like the rain forests. I go to the Dhahran Junior High.

I chose this trip because I thought it was different than any other trip.

I like rain forests and thought it would be a good trip to learn from and to have fun. We are also doing something on the internet and I want to help.

I hope to ensure that people all over the world understand what is happening to the rain forest. Hopefully they will stop all the destruction they are doing and worry about the environment .

My name is Karen. I am 14 , and in 9th grade at Dhahran School.

What interests me is sports like basketball and swimming as well as music and art.

I have lived in Saudi Arabia for more than 4 years and enjoy living here because of many different things.

It is a comfortable community and school and there are many opportunities which normally someone in the States would not get, like traveling.

I don't like the planes, but I do like being in places all over the world, and am very excited about Sumatra.

I chose this trip to get an outside adventure and white-water raft as well as bring home memories to pass on.

I hope we will accomplish more than a day's hike, like getting involved with the Internet; all of this is new to me. I don't think anyone could stay home instead of going on the great two week trek in Sumatra.

UHH I am Ryan R.P.

UHH I am going to the Rain forest and I am Excited.

By now I hope you figured out I am a boy.

I am 13 years old. I am trained for nothing.

My favorite drink is DR. Pepper and Milk.

What turns without moving?

I am taking this trip because I won't see the rain forest when I am older. Because I will not want to go when I am older and the rain forest won't be there.

I hope I get to see and live the adventures of Sumatra. And I hear the food is great.

My name is Georgia and I am 14 years old.

I am taking this trip to Sumatra because I enjoy hiking, camping, and the outdoors.

I also want to see the rain forests before they disappear. I hope to find out more about the rain forest, the animals that live in it, and the culture of the people.

I also would like to help conserve the wildlife of Sumatra. This trip is very special because it may not be available in the future. I want to share my experiences with those who may not have the opportunity to visit Sumatra.

Hi, my name is Julia N. I'm twelve and live in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia.

I enjoy playing softball and play on a team called the Bandits. I play the violin and baritone saxophone, which I play in the school band.

I have traveled all around the world and especially liked going to New Zealand and Australia.

I can't wait to go to Sumatra because it is different from every where else I've been, which is why I chose this trip.

It's going to be fun and it's also going to be a great opportunity to learn about the rainforest, it's people, and also have a chance to share it with the rest of the world.

As you well know, the rain forests are being cut down and I want to see it before it disappears. I hope you enjoy reading about our trip as much as I will enjoy going.

My name is Natalie and I am 14 years old.

I got interested in this trip because last year I went on the school trip to Kenya.

I really enjoy wildlife and the Kenya and Sumatra trips both involve camping in various environments. The Kenya experience was something I wanted to do again and the Sumatra trip seemed to offer this and more.

I do not know exactly what I want to accomplish, but I hope that I can help support the efforts people are taking to save the rain forests.

I know that this trip is very unique and I feel lucky to have the opportunity to be a part of it.

I guess, to be honest, I want to have fun more than anything, but I know I will be experiencing much more than that.

This trip is to educate myself and others about the trouble our wildlife is in.

Patricia -- that's me.

Sorry, that was kind of weird but I figured it would be sooo boring to say " My name is Patricia. "

Anyhow, I'm living ( or rather stuck ) here in Saudi Arabia and I'm totally phsyced about going to Sumatra. I mean, its like my ticket out of this desert and away from my parents to a rain forest with all my good friends.

How cool can you get?

But really, that isn't my real reason for going on this trip -- it's just a delightful bonus.

As soon as I heard about actually going into a rain forest, not seeing it in some book or on TV but really going into it, I wanted to go really badly.

I can't wait to see those tropical plants and orangutans up front and personal. I can't wait to just experience the whole thing -- hiking, shopping, swimming, water rafting.

Like I said before, I'm totally phsyced about the whole deal.

I hope to learn a lot of things, things that you can't pick up in a book. I want to know exactly how it feels in the suppressing humidity, surrounded by strange plants. I want to know exactly what the sound of dozens of birds, each with their different calls, sounds like. I want be able to feel the satisfaction of a long day's hike. I want to be able to peel a leech off my leg and throw it away. I want to have all those little feelings, accomplishments, and experiences that'll make the whole trip awesome.

Hi! My name is Ryan. I live in Saudi Arabia, and I go to school at Dhahran Junior High School. I go to 7th grade.

Oh, and just in case you're wondering, I DON'T live in a tent, and I DON'T ride a camel to school.

It is not very much different to me, living here in Saudi, as it is almost like America, except for the intense heat (a mere 100 degrees on average), and the cold winters(60 degrees).

In my free time, I like to go rollerblading (aggressive), and I like to ride horses.

The reason I am taking this trip is kind of obvious. For THRILL. I live for that feeling of your stomach flying through your head.

I hope to help people learn about the rainforest, and know how they can help on a daily basis.

REMEMBER: ALWAYS RECYCLE

Hi, my name is Stefan. I am thirteen and I live in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia and I am in the seventh grade.

I'm in the band. I play the trumpet. I am 4 ft 9 inches tall and I have brown hair. I like to play baseball and soccer. I have traveled around the world.

I enjoy hiking and camping. That's one of the reasons I chose to go on the Sumatra trip.

We are going to Sumatra in April. I'm exited to go because we are going to go hiking through the rain forest.

Another reason I chose this trip was because I want to see the rain forests before they are destroyed.

Adios!

Hi, my name is Stephen. I'm 14 years old and I've been living in Saudi Arabia for 7 years, from about the beginning of the Gulf War till now.

I'm in 9th grade, I play piano, scuba dive (a lot), and I'm in the school play every year.

Some of the reasons for taking this trip is for its unique values.

I've been to Europe before and I feel it's too touristy. I want to experience a city more thoroughly not just through the window of a tour bus.

The other trips this school is offering including Greece, Turkey, Russia, and Kenya are all nice but are quite commercialized.

In Kenya, it seems that all the animals have a price tag around their necks.

I lived in Kentucky for 7 years before I moved to Saudi.

For some accomplishments I'd like get a better sense of respect for the environment. Hopefully trekking in Sumatra will make me more open minded and realize the devastating effects deforestation has on the rain forest. (beyond my documentary knowledge).

Salamat Datang!

This is DR. D. reporting in from Saudi Arabia. I am packing up my medicines for the rain forest trip to Sumatra.

Time to get in good physical condition so I can keep up with 22 energetic teens. This trip will be the fourth time I will be visiting Indonesia. I am looking forward to seeing our old friends in Bukit Lawang.

Last year there were three orangs being reintroduced into the wild. I wonder if they are now on their own, swinging from tree to tree.

PLEASE NOTE:

To participate in this project you need to do two things :-

1. Contact Bill Cason to tell him you are joining.
2. Register with Patti Weeg at Kidlink so that you can join.

In order to take part in any KIDLINK activity, students have to
answer the four KIDLINK QUESTIONS
and send the answers to: RESPONSE@LISTSERV.NODAK.EDU

It is estimated that

an acre of rainforest is destroyed every second!

We hope you will join us to find out why!
