Hello Patti and Trekkies!

We are in the final stages of preparation for our trip to the Sumatran rainforest. Everyone is very excited and trying to cope with the end of trimester chores like tests and grades while, at the same time, taking care of the more important jobs like packing and breaking in our boots!
We have secured two Macintosh laptop computers and a modem for the trek. We will try to connect with an Internet provider, MedanNet, in Medan, the large city in which we arrive. We'll upload our messages to them, and hope to receive mail as well.
If you continue to write to us at this same address (KIDPROJ@listserv.nodak.edu) my wife will try to forward mail. If not, we'll get to it when we return, or by early May.
Many members of our group are continuing on their vacations and meeting family members in Singapore at the end of our trip.
Our school begins again the first week of May, so please be patient if you don't hear from us personally.

We are also lucky to obtain the services of two scientists when we are in Sumatra, at least for the first couple of days. One is a Canadian man who is a wildlife photographer and bird expert who is trying to set up rehabilitation centers for exotic wildlife that is taken from poachers or markets where they are awaiting sale.
The other is Indonesian, an environmental educator as well, who will be trying to set up educational programs in local schools.
Having these men along will help us understand the rainforest and the local people better.

We now have 62 registered Trekkies, mostly schools or classes, and a few individuals. We have a lot of people to thank for their help and inspiration which we will do at the end of our trek.

We'll talk to you soon!
Ranger Bill

From: Jessica W., Dhahran, Saudi Arabia
This is the second trip to Sumatra that Mr. Gordon and Mr. Cason (our trekkie leaders) are taking from Saudi Arabia. All off us on the trip are very exited to leave for Sumatra on the 30th of March.
The month of March has been full of preperation for the trip. All of us had to by hiking boots and we have to make sure they are broken in. We had to make sure all of our shots were updated, and also everyone had to get the anti-malarial pills.
But the most important thing of all (at least I think so) is buying the right clothing. We wouldn't want to be burning up and dying of humidity in the Rainforest.

From Ashley of Delmar Elementary School, Maryland

Dear Jessica,
I heard that you were excited about going to Sumatra. I would be too. I don't know that I would be able to ride on an airplane for that long.
Why do you have to get the shots? And what in the world are anti-malarial pills?
What do they do for you? What are some things you are taking with you? I never got to see the list that was made. Do you have to wear your boots everyday to get them broken in. I think that buying the right clothes is the most important thing too. I wish you good luck on your trip!

From Bill Cason of Dhahran School, Saudi Arabia

Dear Trekkies,
This will be my last note before we leave Sunday for Sumatra. We are all very excited and busy with packing and last minute details. I hope that we will be able to connect without too much difficulty from Sumatra. MedanNet has given me an account to use and a phone number to call if help is required.
We will be joined by two scientists from Medan when we arrive Monday. One is a Canadian and the other is Indonesian. Both are working on environmental and educational projects. They will be with us for 2 or 3 days to help out with our project.
Wish us luck and enjoy your Virtual Trek! Ranger Bill Cason
