Ozoni

My name is Jodi Ikehara and I am a 6th grader at Manoa Elementary School. I am 11 years old and I live in Hawaii. My recipe is called Ozoni and it is a recipe from Japan.

Ingredients:

4 cups water

1 pound chicken breast fillet (save bones)

1 small piece ginger root, crushed

1 teaspoon salt

1 bunch mizuna, or other greens (blanche, rinse and drain) 6 mochi

1 small bamboo shoot, slice thin

1 matsutake (fresh mushroom) or 3 shiitake (sliver)

1 tablespoon shoyu

Remove skin from chicken fillet. Simmer bones and ginger in water 30 minutes. Strain broth, add salt. Cut chicken in thin slices. Cut greens in 1-inch lengths. Broil mochi until puffed and soft but not brown.

Heat broth to simmering and maintain simmering while adding chicken a few pieces at a time. Simmer for 15 minutes; skim. Add shoyu and simmer additional minute. Arrange greens, mochi, bamboo, and matsutake slices in soup bowls. Slowly pour soup over arrangement. Serve immediately.

Ozoni is a Japanese dish that is very good. Ozoni is sometimes called mochi soup. It is cooked and served on New YearUs Day and is special to me because I am half Japanese. It is also special for New Years Day is my MotherUs birthday.

The tradition of eating ozoni on New YearUs Day was started in the 15th century when Emperor GodaigoUs great-grandson ran away to Tsushima in Owari to escape his enemies. While he hid there, he ate ozoni on New YearUs Day and his luck changed. He felt that it was because he ate ozoni on New YearUs Day.

Ozoni tastes hot and a little like chicken soup. When I eat it I feel warm.
