LIFE IN THE OCEAN

Reykjavik 20. mars 1996

Hello, we are 12 year old students in Grandaskoli, Reykjavik, Iceland and we are working on a project in biology called Life in the ocean. We have just put up a 200 l aquarium where different kinds of sea animals are living, such as crabs, sea urchins, starfish, scallops and even two eels that have been there since last September in fresh water until February when seawater was put into the aquarium.

This winter we have been doing different kinds of computer works, searching for information using CD-ROM and the Internet. We made our own homepage in Icelandic, Danish and English. We did a few project works: Music, geography (Europe), Christmas, the human body, historical places in Iceland. And we got some new penpals through Kidcafe.

Now we want to make a project about life in the oceans. Will you join us and answer the following questions?

You don't have to answer all the questions !!

  1. Name five of the most common food you eat, consisting of fish.
  2. Name five of the most common fishery products in your country.
  3. How many inhabitants in your country work as fishermen or have other occupations concerning fisheries?
  4. How many % of your country's national income is from fishery?
  5. Have you ever eaten Icelandic fish?
  6. If there is a coast in your vicinity - is it polluted or clean?
  7. How far is it from your homes to sea?
  8. What can we do to stop the pollution of the ocean?
  9. Do you have lessons about the life in the sea - if so, what is it about in details?
  10. Do you know of any exciting sea - projects on the Internet?

If you are interested, please answer before the 20th of April

It would be great to have a lot of answers because we are going to present this work on our school's 10th anniversary which will be in May, the 18th. That day, our minister of education will visit the school and view the works of the students.
