Dear kids,

My name is Danielle D'Armi! When there wasn't money,
people traded. If men had a wife who knew how to weave
baskets, he would trade his wife's baskets for a spear
or weapon. You might even have to trade your old small
clothes for new better fitting clothes! Your cd player
would be like 17,000 doller's to buy a car with. What
would you do if you don't have any belongings? How
could you just give up your things? Write back!!!!!!!

                                Your friend,
                                Danielle D'Armi

                  Money Around The World

There are billions of types of money in the world.Money
has 3 main uses. First and most important it is a medium
of exchange. Second it serves as a unit of account. Third
use of money is as a store of wealth. The first coins may
have been made during the 600's BC in Lydia, a country
in what is now western Turkey. The coins were bean-shaped
lumps of eletrum, a natural mixture of silver and gold. The
coins were stamped with a design to show that the king of
Lydia guaranteed them to be of uniform value. Early people
had no system of money. People had to trade as far as
we know. Every country has its own type of money. And
each country has a name for its money.

Krista Young

              A World Without Money
If there were no money I don't know what I would do. If I didn't have any
money I couldn't buy anything. Like if a farmer needed help you could probably
work for food or shelter. But if they didn't need work it would be hard for
a lot of people. Like say if a person traded you some cows and they were
sick. That would be bartering. If you had an apple tree you could trade
apples.

                          Sinceriy,
                            Elizabeth Theil

Dear Kids in the money project,
I have something to tell you....
Imagine being in a world without money....

how would you live? Say if you said that I'll trade you 2 donkeys for
1 gallon of water. Do you want to carry 2 donkeys around just for one gallon
of water? Say if the donkeys were sick do you want to have sick donkeys?
That's how I bpersonally Think came up with money.

Amber S.

          A World Without Money
A world without money would be hard becuse you would have to
trade stuff like cloth. You would have to trade hair
barrettes and toys. You would have to trade big stuff for big stuff
and little stuff for little stuff. So, if you don't have
something big than you can't get anything big. That's why I
like having real money.

Aysha Ansari

If there was a world without money it would be crazy . The reason it would be
crazy is because if you didn't have money you could not buy things .You could
trade but if you wanted something from someone but you would not have any
thing that they want, give services like you could plow someones field if
 they could feed you.

Subject: MONEY: What Maryland Indians used as 'money'
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Kids,

                  ************************
                   Maryland Indians Money
                  ************************

The Maryland Indians made their money out of
shells. They would shine and polish the shells until they
looked like glass. They would also drill a hole in them. The
money the Maryland Indians made out of clam shells were
called peak. They also called it wampum-peak. Peak was usually
purple or white. Another kind of shell that they used was
cockle, they called cockle roanke. Roanke was not polished,
it was broken into pieces but it had holes drilled through it.
Roanke was the least valuable money kind of like our dollars
I guess.
They traded with other indian tribes too. They would
get copper and sea shells from other indian tribes as well as
from the water where they live. Later on when the settlers
came the indians started to trade with them. They would give
the settlers food. They also traded beaver, otter, mink, and
deer skins for tiny bells, colored beads, clay pipes, and
iron knives, fish hooks, and axes. The indians also wanted
guns and rifles, but the settlers would not trade guns with
the indians for fear that they would hurt themselves or
someone else. They also got salt and metal cooking pots. They
liked matchcoats a lot. Matchcoats are a kind of cloak that
was made of coarse wool. Many indians got the firearms from
dishonest settlers, or from other colonies.

Hi kids,

In 640 B.C there was a coin made called the Lion
Head coin. These coins were bumpy and bean shaped. These gold
coins were made in Lydia, a land located in TURKEY. The lions
head is the mark of the king of Lydia. People trusted the king
so they trusted the money.

                   A World Without Money

Dear Daniel (in Brazil),

Nobody will be able to buy anything in this world. As a matter of
fact there wouldn't be anything to buy because nobody would be able to set
anything up because in order to build something you have to buy materials to
build anything with. I would have nothing, not even a house or a car or any
clothes. Now that would be embarrassing big time!!!!!! Cut down a tree and
really make me a house by a pond!!!!

                              Sincerly a money friend,
                                     Kara Guiliano
------------------------------------------------------------------
                   A World With No Money

If the world had no money we would have to trade with
other people. We would have to depend on our neighbors.
If we had to go to the hospital we would have to trade.
We would not be able to get drinks from machines. If I
wanted to buy a suit I would trade 8 and 1 half of a
pound of fish I caught that day. I would also trade a
set of books. To get food I would have to hunt or fish.
I would build a home in the woods near a stream so I
could 1. Fish 2. Hunt 3.Get Fire wood 4. Get water.
I would sell fire wood.

Kara
------------------------------------------------------------------

1.) Money is something that wasn't invented back a long, long long time ago.
Before money the people traded goods for maybe goods other people had.

2.) The reason why people started using money was because people got tired of
trading things because maybe some people might not have had the things
that other people had wanted!

Dear kids,
Hello my name is Levin Hitchens. How are you? I'm fine.
Did you know that I'm in the money around the world project? In
America our money is called dollars and cents. What is your
money called? Back in time people had to trade for things.
Could you dream of having to trade for something you really
liked? How is it where you live? Do you get allowance? If
you do how much do you get? I get seven dollars. Do you
like money and do you use it a lot? I don't use it too much
and I like money.

                                      Your friend,

Subject: MONEY: Stones were heavy to carry...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                       Money

I'm doing research on the new and old one hundred dollar
bill. The person on the dollar bill is Bill Franklin. He
was and still is a famous. He was an inventor. He invented
lots of the things we use today. He was one of those who
signed the Declaration of Independence. He was born in
Boston, Mass.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Money is a way for people to trade. When you go to the store and buy
something they give the money to the cashier and the cashier gives them
   whatever the paid for.

People used to use stones as money but the stones were very heavy. They
started to use coins and paper and this was a lot easier.

A world without money would be very difficult. People have to make things and
work very hard to get one thing that want.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

                        OUR MONEY

Long ago there was no money. Early humans did not need
any money they used simple trades passed down from
generation to generation. For example people like to fish it
would be passed down . In America if we wanted to eat fish we
would go fishing or go to the grocery store. I took a
survey. Four out of 7 people would go to the grocery store
and spend the money then go fishing for free. Over thousands
of years the way of life changed. People began to trade food
and objects.

A world without money would be very different you would not have to buy
alot of things. You would have to make everything. In Ethiopia they don't
use money at all they are also a very poor country. If we didn't use money
we would have to be very creative, because we would have to create all our
clothes,tools,dishes etc...

     What is your money called?

Canadian money is called bills, dollars and coins. We use to have one
dollar bills and two dollar bills but we changed them to loonies, which is
a dollar it has a loon on one side of the coin and Queen Elizabeth on the
other side. Just recently we got twoonies , which we didn't start using
until last year instead of two dollar bills anymore. That is what are
money is called. We will be setting up a web page that shows what some of
are money, past and present looks like. We'll send you the url when it is

Subject: Money around the world - Questions ...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello friends....
1. What is m oney ?
Money is " a thing" we use for trading/buying goods or things we need (more
or less)
Sometimes money is made of paper - sometimes of metal.. copper, silver and
sometimes gold..
The money has to be made by the state, officially, and often money has got=
=20
watermarks and/or small strings of metal in them (paper money)

2. Why did people begin using money ?
Earlier "money" could be cows, fish, skins or other goods that were traded -
imagine bringing 10 cows on the bus and into a store...
It's better bringing $$$$ or =A3=A3=A3=A3 in your wallet... Much easier to=
 carry
bills or coins...

3. Describe the early money.
A long time ago people used to be traders... they traded animals, fish,
fures or other
things they grew/produced in order to get the things they needed/wanted.
Norwegian fishermen went to town with their dried fish and traded it into
goods like
plated & glasses, clothes, ropes - even musical instruments....
Some also traded with gold or silver...
The VIKING kings, who lived about a 1.000 years ago, used gold rings around
their arms,
and broke pieces of the ring to pay their men...
Some were called teh "great Ring-breakers" because they payed their men=
 well....

4. Imagine the world without money...
This would be hard to do....
Or perhaps we all would carry a plastic card - and only had "virtual=
 money"???
We can't imagine what we should use instead.....
Pretty strange if we would start trading with goods again.....

5. What ancient kongdom began with a system of money ?
We know that the Roman Empire used money with "picture" of the emperor...
And we have also seen old CHineese coins.... but we are not sure were the
first money came from..

6. We are not sure of that either... Perhaps the Chineese ???
Egyptians used PAPYRUS - paper very early, but we don't know if they used
this for making money..

7. Which European country was the first to print paper money ?
The printing proccess was invented in Europe in the 13 century..
Before this noone in Europe could print money...
Times were unstable and noone could garantee the value of a piece of=
 paper...
We are not sure what country started, but we guess it was Great Britain...

8. Minting... is the making of money...
In Norway we have the "royal Minting" at Kongsberg (a city) translated into
English the word
woould be: KING'S Mountain - because large amounts of silver were found in
this erea=20
about 300 years ago and a city of mining and miners grew up there...

9. Who/what is found on money?
A portrait of the king of Norway is found on most coins...

Money
by Leah Osthus, Sara Schadel

WHAT IS MONEY? Anything that is generally accepted by people in exchange
for things they sell or the work they do. Gold and silver were once the
most common forms of money. today money is mostly made of bills except for
the 25, 10, 5, and 1 cent coins. Each country has it's own basic unit of
money. In the United States, for example, the basic unit is the U.S.
dollar.

WHAT IS FOUND ON MONEY? On the left side of the dollar bill is the seal and
letter of the Federal Reserve Bank that issued the note. On the opposite
side is the Seal of the Department of the Treasury. The series numbers
tells the year the bill was made, that is located right below the Seal of
the Department. In the middle of each bill is a president. For example: the
dollar bill has President George Washington.

WHAT IS "MINTING"? Minting is the manufacturing of coins. The production of
a new coin begins with artist proposed designs for the coins. After
government officials select a design, an artist constructs a large clay
model of a coin.

Indian tribes barter to get things.

THE HISTORY OF MONEY
Every day we use coins, paper money, credit cards, and computer translation
to buy goods and services. But before that the Romens were using metal like
the ones use today. Many of thes early coin were made in the temple of the
goddes Juno or the goddes Moneto. Itsfrom the name "Moneto" that we get the
word "money".

WHAT IS MONEY?
Money is what ever people agree to exsept in payment for goods and
sevecies. Some Amarican Indian, for example used beeds called wampum during
colinal days. Also some money ranges in size, color, and value.

DISCRIBE SOME EARLY MONEY
The Greeks of ancient times started so many of our modern ideas of science,
art, and architecture, its not surprising that they started our idea of
money and coins. it started about 650 B.C. . These coins looked nothing
like our modern coins we know today. They were made of blobs of electrum,
an alloy [mixture] of gold and silver.

Money is credits that you earn by working hard. You can get money also by
asking. Then you can spend money on things that interest you. On money you
can find things that represent the country. Like our old presedents,
momerals, and numbers / dates. Some early money has big writing and old
dates.

1)What is money?- Money is anything that people will accept in exchange for
the things they sell and the work they do.
2)Why did people use money?- To take place of unorganized trade called
bartering.
3)Who first used money?- Lydia used bean shaped coins called electrum. The
king of Lydia had them stamped to gurantee that they were of uniform size.
This saved worrying over th worth of the coins.
China first used paper money during the 600's A.D. The Italian explorer
Marco Polo saw the Chinese using the money without any argument or trouble.
He was surprised seeing it getting accepted by merchants and traders
without any cause for argument.

Some of the presidents and famous people on our bills are are George
Washington on the one dollar bill, Ulysses S. Grant on the 50 dollar bill,
Benjamin Franklin on the 100,Salmon Chase on the 10,000, Woodrow Wilson on
our 100,000.

Money here makes you poor or rich, you work for it then you spend it on
things like clothing and food to stay alive. If you don't have very much
money ,if any, you'll probably have a hard time here.

At early stages of coins they were made of gold and they were lumpy and
inconvienent. They soon made them smaller and lighter.People start copying
coins whit cheaper metal. Soon they made rigged edges and coins were to
hard to copy.

Funny Money and Counterfit Money
By Bill McDonald Jr. and Bill C. Pedler The Tenth

Funny money is all over the world. Like stores. Examples of funny money are
like three dollar bill that don't exist. The three dollar bills have the
president with a beard. It is fake and if you try to use it you can get
arrested for use of counterfit money. Usually when cops bust in to a house
were they are making counterfit money they find at least a quarter million.
Then they arrest them and take them to jail. If convicted you can get a
minimum of 5 years in prison. Do not use counterfit money.

Dear Kids,

                      All About Minting
                 ****************************

Mint is a place in the United States that mints or
makes coins. A lot of other countries call it minting too.
The government is the only authority that can mint or make
money. The mint or minters are supervised by the Bureau of
Mint. There are mints in Denver, Philadelphia, San Fancisco,
and West Point. The mints only make coins like, pennies,
nickels, dimes, quarters, silver dollars, and half dollars.
The Bureau of Engraving and printingmakes paper money.
Historians think the world's first mint was
founded in the 600's BC in Lydia. Lydia is now part of
Turkey.

Dear Patti,

What a week it was! I really had no time to sit at the computer. When I came back from school I'm doing my homework, ohh I have just tons of homework! And after this I must go to work at the school theatre. I participate in a performance, all "actors" and "actresses" meet every day around 16:00. And then I go to rehearsal of Autumn Show. I'm one of pretenders to title "Miss School Autumn 96". Some people say that I have big chances but I don't think so. Well, here are answers to questions for discussion (continue):

4. People don't know such words as "buy" and "sell" at the place where there is no money. And they change their superfluous products with product that they need.

8. Minting is manufacturing of coins and printing money. There are many mints in our country and some of them are in Moscow, St. Petersburg and Kuybyshev. These mints are working now. One mint was built around 250 years ago in my city and now this historical place serves as a museum.

9. There are buildings, portraits, state symbols and animals on money. Often there are portraits of head of State or very famous men or famous buildings on coins or paper bills.

I don't know answers for questions number 5, 6 and 7 and think you'll have enough answers for it and all of them will be identical.

I'll try to write about money in my country tomorrow.

Best wishes and love,
Olya
