Hello everyone in the "Money Around the World" project!

Here are some questions for you to answer so that we can learn about the money in your country.

  1. What is your money called?
  2. Tell us the names of the bills and coins. Who or what is on them? Do you know why these images are there?
  3. Are there words on your coins and bills? What are they and what do they mean? Are there raised marks for the visually impaired on your money?
  4. How has your money changed over the years? Have coins disappeared? Have there been changes in the bills?
  5. Why did these changes take place?

Let's hear from you! Don't forget to give us the URL of any sites where we can see your money on the WWW.

Warm hugs,
Patti

                    Our Money

  Who's on each coin?

See Pictures 1.) The Penny is worth one cent. Abraham Lincoln is on the front of the Penny, and on the back of the Penny is the Lincoln Memorial. The Penny contains 95 percent Copper, and 5 percent Tin and Zink. It weighs 3 grams. People call it the Penny, and other people call it the cent. 2.) The Nickel is worth 5 cents. It has Thomas Jefferson on the front, and the Monticello, (Jefferson's home) on the back. It's color is silver. 3.) The Dime is worth 10 cents. It has Franklin D. Roosevelt on the front, and a torch with the Olive Branch and the Oak Branch on the back. It's color is also silver. 4.) The Quarter is worth 25 cents. It has Goerge Washington on the front, and the American Eagle on the back. It's color is Silver. 5.) The Half Dollar is worth just what it says, a Half of a dollar! Its color is Silver. It has John F. Kennedy on the front, and The Great Seal on the back. 6.) The Silver Dollar is also worth just what it says, one dollar. Its color is Silver. It has Dwight D. Eisenhower on the front, and the Bald Eagle with one Olive Branch on the back. What's on each coin? Every coin has to be stamped with the exact amount of money it is worth. The word "Liberty" is also stamped on each coin to remind us that we live in a country that has freedom. The motto "E pluribus unum" ("Out of many, one") tells us that lots of people joined together to form our nation. The motto " IN God We Trust" has been printed on all coins since the year 1984. The letter D is stamped on coins from Denver Mint, P stands for Philadelphia, and S means San Francisco. I think all of the USA coins have both "In God We Trust" and "E Pluribus Unum (Latin for (Out of Many, One") because even though we are one nation people from around the world live here. For example my parents originally came from Vietnam. So "Out of Many" probably means out of many nations, and "One" probably means one nation.

"In god" must mean that everyone believes in god. However it didn't say whether it was Jesus or Buddha.

What words are found on your money?

The main unit of our money is called "Shekel" (the plural is called
"Shkalim"). The formal name is "Shekel Hadash" which means New Shekel but
in everyday use you`d say just "Shekel", because it`s shorter. It is
divided to 100 units of "Agora" (plural - "Agorot"). The
Shekel`s international marking is NIS which means New Israeli Shekel.
We have coins of 1/2 Shekel, 1 Shekel, 5 Shekels, a quite new
two-metal coin of 10 Shekels. We also have coins of 10 agorot, 5 agorot
and 1 agora (the last two are not in use, because their value is too
small). We have a 10 Shekels bill, a 20 Shekels bill, a 50 Shekels bill, a
100 Shekels bill and a 200 Shekels bill. Maybe we have more valuable
bills, but I don`t know about them.
On each coinand bill we have the words "BANK ISRAEL" (in hebrew, of
course) - the main bank of Israel.
When Israel was established (in the year 1948) the main coin was called
"Lira". I think it was divided to units of "Grush", but I don`t know how
many Grushim composed a Lira. Then (I don`t know when), because of the
inflation, the Lira was changed to Shekel and after a short time, again
because of the inflation, the Shekel was changed to a new Shekel. I think
the old Lira has the value of about 0.00001 of an Agora of today.

Our money is called shkalim.
The names of the bills and coins are: Agurot and Shkalim. The coins reach
10 Shekel and larger amounts of money appear as bills. We have coins of:
10, 50 agurot.Shkalim start from one avd up.
There are words on our coins and bills. On the 10 agurot ther is a menorah
that symbolizes our atonomy. Onthe 50 agurot is the harp which is related
to the the harp of David from the bible. On the bill of 20 shekels there is
the picture of Moshe Sharet, prime minister. On the bill of 50 Shekel the
piccture is of Agnon, an nobel prize hebrew author winner. On the bill of
100 shekels there is a picture of Yitzak Ben Zvi, second prime minister
of Israel. On our money we do not have marks for the visually impaired.
Money used to be called pounds and was related to the English money. The
coins had a smaller value, starting from 1 Agura. The shapes of the coins
changed as well. The bills had different pictures on them and there value
changed.
These changes took place due to the devaluation of money. The name Pounds
was changed to Shkalim because Shkalim symbolized hebrew momey used during
the times of the first and second temple.

1. The currency in our country has passed through different stages and had
different names, like REIS, TOSTAO, CRUZEIRO, CRUZEIRO NOVO,
CRUZADO, CRUZEIRO and CRUZEIRO REAL. All these changes

and it is the only one that has been able to hold inflation back lately..

3. One REAL = 1.02 dollar.

One individual bottle of coke : R$ 0,70.
One ice cream : R$ 1,00.

        Dear friends,

13- How has your money chandeg over the year? Have coins
disappeared?Have there been chands in the bills?

Until 1942, Brazil (used adopted) in its monetary system the
Portuguese standard, Real, plural form Reis.
On the Colonization time, 1645, 1646 and 1654 were coined in Brazil,
the first coin.
They were square , with Roman numeral in the values: III,
VI, and XII Florins by gold, silver and copper.
In the first half of XIX century the most (comnon usual) coin was by
copper.
In the Regency period , there were great quantily of false coin.
This motivated the exchange of coins to bill ( paper- currency)
During Pedro II reing , was used gold , silver and bronze coins.
The Portuguese Real was abolished in 1942 and replaced for Cruzeiro.
The Brazilian debased coin produced several replacement of currency.
1942 - Cruzeiro - one cruzeiro - one thousand reis
1964 - suppression of cents (centavo)
        1967 - creation of new Cruzeiro - 1 new Cruzeiro = 1.000 Cruzeiros
        1970 - return Cruzeiro - 1 Cruzeiro = 1.000 new Cruzeiro
        1986 - creation of Cruzado - 1 Cruzado =1.000 Cruzeiro
        1989 - creation of new Cruzado - 1 new Cruzado = 1.000 Cruzado
        1990 - return the name Cruzeiro - 1 Cruzeiro = 1 new Cruzado
        1993 - creation of Cruzeiro Real - 1 Cruzeiro Real = 1.000 Cruzeiros
1994 - creation of Real- 1 Real =2.750 cruzeiros reais
Before this is created URV (Value Real Unit) a transitory currency
to Real our present currency

        14. Why did these changes take place?

The inflation and the devaluation motivated all the changes in our
currency.

                                Warmest regards,

Provavelmente, pela rapidez na aprova=E7=E3o legal do =93lay-out=94 .=20

10. Como se chama a sua moeda?
Atualmente Real.
 mudan=E7as monet=E1rias, a nova unidade n=E3o implicou em corte de zeros ou=
carimbagem de c=E9dulas de padr=E3o anterior. O Banco Central do Brasil=

 Voc=EA sabe porque essas imagens est=E3o l=E1?
No reverso,=
 c=E9dulas de 100 mil cruzeiros, de 1992. Nas demais est=E3o estampados=
desenhos da gar=E7a, arara, on=E7a pintada e garoupa.

12. Existem palavras em suas moedas/notas ? Quais s=E3o elas e o que elas=
significam?
 ef=EDgie da Rep=FAblica e, =E9 claro, embaixo est=E1 o nome do Brasil, em=
alto relevo tamb=E9m.
Do lado esquerdo no meio,=

 desapareceram? Houve mudan=E7a nas notas?=20
O Brasil tem vivido grandes mudan=E7as no plano econ=F4mico, especialmente=
nos =FAltimos 10 anos. Por este motivo, muitas moedas desapareceram, entre=
 elas o R=E9is, o Cruzeiro, o Cruzeiro Novo, o Cruzado e outros.

Subject: Re: Money - from Norway

Hi there...
About our money:

50Nkr - O A VINJE - you can see his "face" on the bill.
He was a famous Norwegian writer...

Nkr100 - Camilla Collett - a famous lady from late 1890's
One of the first ladies fighting for women's rights...

Nkr500 E Grieg - One of Norways most famous composers -
wrote among others: In the hall of the mountain King....
Lived in Bergen about 100 years ago...

I guess you can find music of Edvard Grieg in the US as well...
If not, tell me and I'll send you a CD....

So long,
Tor Arne
