Hello all!
During this week at school please have your students compose a letter
all about them, their school, their location, etc. Here are some items you
might want to weave into your letter. One letter per school is really enough
unless there are more in your classes who really want to add their own thoughts.
You be the judge on this point. ;-)
We'd like to know...
- Your global address. Where are you? Latitude and longitude? Let's
find each other on the world map.
- Is your city known for any special reason?
- Are there any famous landmarks there?
- What is your GMT factor? We are GMT -4 right now because we are still
in Daylight Savings Time. That ends in October
- What season of the year is it for you now?
- Tell us about your school. Regular day school? Boarding school?
All girls? All boys? Mixed? Private? Religious? Public? Size? How many
students from grade ? to grade ?
- What days of the week are you in school? What hours?
- How old are the students in this project from your class?
- What are their favorite things to do outside of school?
This should give us all a start. ;-) As you and your students
write these messages this week feel free to write back to the KIDPROJ-COORD list
and tell us how the writing process worked. Did the kids come up with other
things we should all include? Was it too difficult to write one group letter?
How did you accomplish this. In other words... KIDPROJ-COORD will be our place
for feedback to each other.
When sending our KIDPROJ mail don't forget to use the subject line like
this:
MONEY: <your subject line here> Have a great week! Warm hugs,
Patti Wed Sep 18 18:08 EDT 1996

Subject: Money Around the World
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm teling everyone about myself!!! For the Money Around the world
project I live in Brazil, on the state of Sao Paulo. I don't know the latitude
or longitude, but for those who don't know where is Brazil, it's in South
America!! Many people think that Brazil is a huge forest, but it is NOT, it is
just like any other country, but many people see the Amazon Forest and think
that the hole Brazil is like the Amazon. We are know in the end of winter and
the spring is going to start in about a week, here is very cold, unlike other
winters.
About my school, here in Brazil, I wake up 6:00am, take a shower, and go to
school, my first class is at 7:15am, on Mondays, I come home at 11:00am, on Tue,
Thu and Fri I come home at 11:45 and on Wednesday I come home at 12:30. It is a
private school, in Brazil the public schools are very poor, I don't want to say
bad about Brazil, but the government say a lot but don't do too much about the
schools. I'm on 8th grade, and the school year ends on November. I'm 14 years
old, and the thing I most like to do outside the school is go onto the
Internet!!!
That's a litlle about myself. Tell me about you!!!

Subject: MONEY: Introduction from Delmar, Maryland USA
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi kids! We're the kids from Delmar doing the money project. Our
town is called "The Town that is too big for one state." Can you
guess why? We only have one traffic light in our town. Is your city known for
any special reason? Look for us on the map. We're here: 38 27 21N and 75 34
40W. Famous markers of the Mason Dixon Line are in our town. They are near
Todd's backyard. Do you know what the Mason Dixon Line divides? Our school is
Delmar Elementary School. We have a lot of kids here. To be exact we have 978
kids. It is a public school. It is not an all boys school and it is not an all
girls school. It's both. It is the only elementary school in the town and it
is big. It is two stories high. And even then there is still not enough room.
We have to have portables. There are 6 of them out back. Our school is
seven grades long. We go to school from Kindergarten through 6th grade. We
have 5 and 6 classes for every grade level. In our grade we have 5 subjects.
Some kids in grades 5 and 6 are doing the money project. We have kids 10 and 11
years old in this project. All of the kids are answering a question that Mrs.
Weeg gave us so we can write this letter. Ebony wrote the days of the week we
go to school. We go to school on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and
Friday. We get off on Saturday and Sunday. We also get off a half hour for a
recess. Our school hours are 8:30 - 3:00. We start school in September
and end in June. When we get to school we have to go to our homerooms because
that is where we keep all of our possessions. Some kids eat breakfast at
school. When the dismissal bell rings most of us get on the bus and go home.
Some kids walk home. When we get home some of us feed our pets and some of us
get ready for soccer games if we have them. We think this is nice that we are
doing the money project. When do you go to school? Do you love school.
We do!!!!!!!! Now we are going to tell you how some people feel about the "Money"
project. Jennifer White feels great about doing the project. Ebony feels the
same way. She feels great about it. Andrew feels that it is cool that we are
learning about money from different countries. Billy thinks that it is very
interesting. Jeremy thinks that it is fun to learn about money. Kaley thinks
this is a good idea for Delmar's KIDLINK program. Kristen Smith likes it and
she thinks it's four fingers. Christina Nolker thinks it is cool and she thinks
it's nice to see all kinds of money. Ashley thinks it is nice and she is
interested in it. We all think that the money project is very neat and cool!
The season of the year for us now is almost fall. Here it is 65-70 degrees
in Autumn. In the fall the leaves change colors. Do you know what autumn is?
It is when the temperature cools and leaves turn colors like red, orange, yellow
and brown. What is the temperature where you live? We are 5 hours behind GMT
time except when we are on Daylight Saving Time like we are right now. So right
now GMT is 4 hours ahead of us. Do you push your clock forward an hour in the
Spring and turn it back an hour in the Fall? In October we will turn our
clocks back an hour. These are the things we like to do outside of school. We
like to go to the movies and play baseball. Other favorite things to do
out of school for the boys are football and soccer. The girls like to make
crafts, go to Girl Scouts and make keychains with colored pieces of gimp.
Stephanie wants to tell you about how she makes keychains: "I like to make
all kinds of keychains. I like to make them with gimp and also with beads. I
have all kinds of beads. I have little ones, big ones, and all different
shapes, too. I also have a lot of different colors. I have a lot of colors of
gimp. You can make ones that are spiral, square, and even ones that look like a
zipper. The square ones are a little bit more difficult and take a little more
time. The zipper ones are not difficult and only take about fifteen minutes to
fourty-five minutes. If you make the zipper you need three different colors, one
of which has to be longer than the rest of them. If you make the square one you
only need two pieces of gimp, both of which are the same length. Once you learn
how to do them and get good at them, they are alot of fun to do!!!" Do the
girls make these keychains in your country? Wonder how much they would cost...?
Your new friends, Ashley, Michael, Jamie, Kaley, Ebony, Elizabeth, Kara,
Kristen, Christina, Jeremy, Stephanie, Gene, Cate, Melissa, Dominique, Jennifer,
Billy, Andrew, Caitlin, Ashleigh, Amber, John, Levin, Christine, Rebecca, Tommy,

southern Norway. If you visit our home page at:
http://www.pmddata.no/eydehavn/ you can see some pictures from our part of
the country and a map of southern part of Norway where we live. There are also
some informatins about Eydehavn at our homepage. We are around 100 students at
our school - from 1st - 6th grade... That means that we are the oldest... and
next year we'll start at junior high... Most of us like to play football,
volleyball and basket ball both at school and at home. In summer we often go
swimming in the sea a few minutes by bike from our school In winter we can go
skiing or skating here - on a small lake just 200 meters from school. In our
country we speak NORWEGIAN - and in the north some people speak LAPP-language.
That is vey different from our language. We don't understand it... Our money is
called Norwegian"CROWNS" eller "KRONER" in Norwegian. We'll
be back telling you what we have to pay for things we like and need later...

Hello everyone, We are a new Internet class of seventh and eighth graders
at Meeker Middle School in Tacoma, Washington. Tacoma is located on the Puget
Sound on the west side of the Cascade mountain range. We are a Pacific Northwest
state just south of British Columbia, Canada. Some of the special landmarks
around Tacoma are the Narrows Bridge, Mt. Rainier to the east, the Space Needle
in Seattle to the north, and Boeing airplanes where some of our parents work.
Our weather has changed from very warm and sunny to cold and rainy. It seems the
start of fall ended and winter has taken over. Meeker Middle School has about
600 students and is only about six years old. It's one of ten middle schools in
Tacoma. We think we are the best and get the highest scores on tests. We have
both boys and girls intramural sports three days each week after school. The
boys have football and the girls have soccer. Starting this week we will have
twenty students from Invercargill, New Zealand staying with some of our families
and going to school with us. We will send twenty students to New Zealand in
March. Some of us like to go to the shopping malls nearby and play video games
at the arcade. There are also lots of movie theaters. When the weather was nice,
some of us went to a place called Wild Waves park. There are big water slides
and a large wave pool that's lots of fun. From Meeker Middle School

Hi! This is Mrs. Dalton's Class from Bowden, Alberta, Canada.
Our global address is 52N 114W. Bowden school is known for being the most
technologically advanced in Central Alberta. We are a farming community rich in
grain, cattle, and oil & gas reserves. Our GMT factor is -6 with daylight
savings time. Right now, the season is sort of fall and sort of summer too. The
weather fluctuates between cold and warm. Like just two weeks ago our
temperatures were at a steamy 25-30 degrees for the whole week and even a few
days into the next. Now, we have temperatures of about 1 degree to about 15
degrees. During this week, the temperature was about 22 and then it has been
raining with temperatures of about 1-2 degrees. On the first day of fall, Sept.
23, we were visited by an incredible snowstorm! Weird, huh? Our school is just
your regular technologically advanced public school. It has 6 hour school days I
think. Our class in particular is a room called a model tech room. These rooms
have 8-9 computers and they are very modern. The computers are used for
everything from the internet to typing. We go to school every week from Monday
to Friday and sometimes we have early dismissals due to teacher meetings. We
don't go to school to about two weeks during Christmas holidays and we also have
Easter and two months summer holidays. We to school from 9:00AM to 3:25PM. The
youngest person in the classroom is 12 and the oldest is 15. Some of the things
that the people enjoy doing in my class are hockey, TaeKwon-Do, 4-H: Horse clubs
and Beef clubs, piano, swimming, and skate boarding.

Olah pessoal, Somos Cintia, Patricia, Ednice, Aline, Claudia,

Ednice, Aline, Claudia, Cristiane and Veronica, we study at Municipal School Dr.
Alexandre Leal Costa, it is in Salvador - Bahia - Brasil. Nossa escola eh
Our school is a small one, but it has a good "teaching"(?),
from 5th. ----------- to 8th grade, it works three turns(?). On
morning,5th and 6th grades ---------- with students of 9 to 16 years
old; in afternoon 6th, 7th and 8th with students of 12 to 18 years old; and at
night, 5th to 8th grades with students of more then 15 years old.
Every one that visits Salvador,
speaks highly of it because it has many enchantments, excitements (?) and "axes".
Pelourinho is one of -------------- the most important touristic point. It
was recently recovered/recuperated --------------------- and it has
many leisure options. We love our beaches, specially Jaguaribe and Piata, where
we can find many "cats" (it means nice boys).
------------------- O carnaval daqui tambem eh muito famoso, importamos para
varias cidades do Brasil, com seus trios eletricos e muitos cantores baianos, "atras
do trio soh nao vai quem jah morreu" como diz Moraes Moreira (grande
compositor baiano e conhecido). Carnaval here is also very famous. We export it
to many cities of Brasil, with trios eletricos (a kind of sound bus) and many
singers of Bahia, ------------------- "after the trio, just who is
died doesn't follow it" as Moraes Moreira says in his song (he is a very
known composer of Bahia). Estamos ansiosas para participarmos deste projeto,
pois achamos legal. Nos estudamos a 8a serie, temos 15 anos (com excessao de
Cristiane) e gostamos de namorar, ir a praia, viajar, dancar *pagode* e ouvir
musica. Esperamos fazer muitas amizades. We are anxious to participate in this
project, because we consider it a very nice one. We study at 8th grade (except
Cristiane) and we like to flirt, to go to the beach, to travel, to dance "pagode"
and to listn music. We hope to make many friends. Grandes beijos da
turma do alcosta : Cris, Paty, Cintia, Nice, Aline, Cau e Veronica.
Many kisses from the alcosta groups: Cris, Paty, Cintia, Nice, Aline,

Hi kids! Welcome to the "Money Around the World" project.
Even though we will be talking about MONEY this won't cost you a dime... or
a centavo or a... kronur... or a pence... or anything - but your TIME. Time is
money, though, isn't it? This first week of 'class' we would like all of you to
introduce yourselves so we can get to know each other. I'd like to know who is
here in this virtual classroom with me! Let's see... Let me look at my list of
students. If you are here please raise your hand and say, "Bom dia!"
or "Good Morning!" or whatever you say in your country. I see these

am sure we will see them soon. C'mon kids... we'd love to have you here!
(Teacher, Tor Arne, is leading the group) Did I miss anyone?? Please help me
if I did. During this week it would be great if you could work together in your
schools and write a nice letter of introduction. Feel free to use your native
language. If you can also put an English translation with it that would be
excellent. If you cannot we will have someone who can help with translations.
Be sure to use the subject line when you write to KIDPROJ since several projects
will be going on at the same time in this virtual school house we have here in
KIDPROJ land. For example: MONEY: Introduction from Recife, Brasil Your
beautiful smiling faces are a sign that we will have a great project together.
Welcome! [Teachers - We will chat in the teacher's lounge at

you could have seen them huddled around the computer. It is so much fun to have
a picture of your keypal. Have a look: http://www.pmddata.no/eydehavn Warm
hugs, Patti ---------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Kids in Norway, The reason why people started using money is
because if you did not have cows skins to trade you couldn't buy anything. Money
is important to people because they could save it for something big. What does
your money look like? If the world did not have money we would probably still
have trade wars. Money solved most of the problems. Money also causes some
problems. Is money a big deal in your country?
Your friend, Trey

sarah00@ultranet.com We are Cintia, Patricia, Ednice, Aline, Claudia,
Cristiane, and Veronica, we study in the Dr. Alexandre Leal Costa Municipal
School, it's located in Salvador-Bahia, Brasil Our school is little, but has
good teaching, from grades 5a to 8a. In the morning is grades 5a to 6a with
students from 9 to 16 years old. In the afternoon is grades 6a, 7a, and 8a with
students from 12 to 18 years old, and at night is grades 5a to 8a with students
over 15 years old. The city of Salvador is great for all that that arrive here,
we have many. The Pelourinho is one of the principal points and tourist
attraction, it was recently restored and it has many things to do. We love our
beachs, principally Jaguaribe and Piata, where there's many *cats* (good looking
guys). The carnival here also is very famous, we import from various cities of
Brasil, with many singers and groups. We are anxious to particapate in this
project, we think it's cool. We study in grade 8a, we're 15 years old (with the
exception of Cristiane) and we like to go on dates, go to the beach, dance, and
listen to music. We hope to have fun. Big kisses from us all : Cris, paty,
Cintia, Nice, Aline, Cau and Veronica.
