Summary: Students interview different professional people,ie; folks with jobs (including homemakers) and find out how they use math in their fields...to help show that the math you learn now *will* be relevant to your future. Math involves my work everyday because I have to count how many people
are at meetings and youth and children activities. I alsohave to keep
the budget of the church. Interviewed: Chuck Elliott - State Trooper
I use math when I add speeds to tell people how fast theyŐre going, and
to determine speed equations to tell how fast people were going in a
crash. I have to add miles at the end of a shift. I have to add time
for different activities. I have to multiply to tell people what their
fines are. I cannot use a calculator on my job. I have to be able to
add and multiply in my head. Interviewed: Virginia Hall - teacher
I use math to teach students how to do math. I also use it to grade
studentsŐ work and to average report cards. Interviewed: David Richardson - Machine Shop Owner
I use math when I have to order materials for my shop, when I have to
cut out metal, and when I use a tape measure and ruler. Interviewed: Mom - nurse
I have to calculate drug dosages, convert body weight from pounds to
kilograms, and figure how fast IV fluids should run.
