MATH AROUND US

4. Mapping It Out

Math Mapping sent by Irish School

We spent a lot of time measuring our school and MAPPING IT OUT!
We hope you will have fun seeing what our school looks like.

Here is what you need to do:

Materials:
4 sheets of centimeter graph paper
    markers
    ruler
    tape or glue

Lets get started:

    1. Tape all 4 sheets of graph paper together overlapping the
ends so you have one BIG sheet about 14 inches wide and
       19 inches long.

    2. Draw a X axis(horizontal) through the middle of your new
       sheet of centimeter paper.

    3. Draw a Y axis(vertical) through the middle of your new
       sheet of centimeter paper.

    4. Start in the upper right corner of your big sheet and label
       that 1.
Label the upper left corner 2
Label the lower left corner 3.
Label the lower right corner 4.

You now have your quadrants! Congratulations.

    5. Follow the below for each quadrant.

       Quadrant 1:

Start at the bottom right corner of quadrant 1, at point (18,0)
go up .5 square with the pen/marker down, point (18, .5)
go left 6.5 squares with the pen/marker down, point (11.5, .5)
go up 4.5 squares with the pen/marker down, point (11.5, 5)
go right 4 squares with the pen/marker down, point (15.5, 5)
go up 7 squares with the pen/marker down, point(15.5, 12)
go left 4 squares with the pen/marker down, point(11.5, 12)
go up 2 squares with the pen/marker down, point(11.5, 14)
go right 1.5 squares with the pen/marker down, point(13, 14)
go up 2 squares with the pen/marker down, point(13, 16)
go left 1.5 squares with the pen/marker down, point(11.5, 16)
go up 1 square with the pen/marker down, point(11.5, 17)
go left 9 squares with the pen/marker down, point (2.5, 17)
go up .5 square with the pen/marker down, point (2.5, 17.5)
go left until the end of the quadrant with
                               the pen/marker down, point (0, 17.5)

       Quadrant 2:

Start at the middle of your page, point (0,0) and
go up the Y axis 17.5 squares with the pen/marker up
go left 2 squares with the pen/marker down, point (-2, 17.5)
go down .5 square with the pen/marker down, point (-2, 17)
go left 9 squares with the pen/marker down, point (-11, 17)
go down 3 squares with the pen/marker down, point (-11, 14)
go left 5 squares with the pen/marker down, point (-16, 14)
go down 7.5 squares with the pen/marker down, point (-16, 6.5)
go right 7.5 squares with the pen/marker down, point (-8.5, 6.5)
go down until end of quadrant with the pen/marker down,
                             point(-8.5, 0)

       Quadrant 3:

Start at the bottom right corner of quadrant 3.
go up the Y axis 18 squares with the pen/marker up, point( 0, -6)
go left 2 squares with the pen/marker down, point (-2, -6)
go down .5 squares with the pen/marker down, point (-2, -6.5)
go left 3.5 squares with the pen/marker down, point (-5.5, -6.5)
go down 6.5 squares with the pen/marker down, point (-5.5, -13)
go left 9.5 squares with the pen/marker down, point (-15, -13)
go up 5 squares with the pen/marker down, point (-15, -8)
go left 1.5 squares with the pen/marker down, point (-16.5, -8)
go up 7 squares with the pen/marker down, point (-16.5, -1)
go right 8 squares with the pen/marker down, point (-8.5, -1)
go up until end of quadrant with the pen/marker down, (-8.5, 0)

       Quadrant 4:

Start at the bottom left corner of quadrant 4.
go up the Y axis 18 squares with the pen/marker up, point (0,-6)
go down 8 squares with the pen/marker down, point (0, -14)
go right 8.5 squares with the pen/marker down, point (8.5, -14)
go up 8 squares with the pen/marker down, point (8.5, -6)
go right until end of quadrant with the
                                            pen/marker down, point (18, -6)
go up until end of quadrant with the pen/marker down, point (18, 0)

You have our school!

Points of interest: We are what they term a POD school.
                           We have three pods -
Pod one is in quadrant 1 and contains
first, second and 2/3 combo grades
Pod two is in quadrant 2 and contains
                                  third, and fourth grades
Pod three is in quadrant 3 and contains
                                  fifth, and sixth grades
Kindergarten is in quadrant 4, to the right
                                    of the gym
The front door goes from (-2, -6) to (0, -6)
The principal's offices is to the left of
the front door and contains point (4, -9)
The gym and cafeteria is the big room to the
right of the front door and contains point
                                 (4, -9)
                           Our classrooms contain point (13,8)
Our media center is is the middle of the back of
the building with the y axis going through it.

Our Macintosh lab contains point (9,3)

Draw our school and label it!
Send it to us with a map of your school, we will do the same for you!
