MATH AROUND US

2. Math at Work

Begin Date: November 1
End Date: Open throughout duration of project.
Summary:

Students interview different professional people,ie; folks with jobs (including homemakers) and find out how they use math in their fields...to help show that the math you learn now *will* be relevant to your future. Interviews would be shared on the list.

Math in Careers
by Ava R.

I interviewed three people for math in careers. First, I interviewed Bob Rawski. He is an architect. He said he used math in his career by keeping track of project budgets, keeping track of project schedules, to calculate fees for architects and engineers, and to measure sizes and calculate areas.

The second person I interviewed was Wanda Rawski. She is a real estate agent. She said she used math in her career by calculating market value for houses, calculating cost per square foot, to determine buyers qualifications, and to calculate commission fees.

The third and last person I interviewed was Rick Hamilton. He designs computers. He said he uses math in his career by calculating how the computer will run, writing programs- making something go for a certain amount of time, calculating the temperature the computer will break down at, and calculating what temperature the computer should stay at to keep from breaking down.

My dad uses math by reasoning and problem solving he is an economist and for a while he was a teacher at the university in Ecuador.

My mom is also an economist she uses math to predict the costs and consumes of things also like my dad for a while she taught economy at the university in Ecuador.

My grandpa Julio Sanchez, he use to use math to find the money of the credit union and then he to split it up to the other people : (He also was a teacher he taught math while teaching).

My second grandpa Francisco Paez, worked on the sencus of the publation he used math to get the percentages: how many people there is in one country or another.

Miss Johnson, our student teacher use math to grade the papers for grades and to mainly teach math in the lessons that she teaches.

Eve Bull is a Seamstress
" Uuh lets see well I use math to figure seam width or length."

Lea von Kaenel is an Interior Architect.
"I use math everyday, to prepare budget fees for my clients, and to calculate invoices. I also use math to draw scale drawings. I usually use a calculator because I use large numbers."

Robert Wood is a Manufacturers Rep.
" I use math to calculate fabric yardage to upholster furniture and to figure prices for my dealers. Math is helpful when I travel to estimate time and mileage.I also use math to schedule my appointments."

My Math Interview on Math in Careers
By Kathy O.

I interviewed four people to find out how they use math in their jobs. The first one, Xiaofen Wang, who is a waitress, says there is a lot of math going on during her job. She uses math in taking orders, in adding up orders, and finding a table with the right amount of chairs for the guests. There is also tax add to the orders. She says she uses subtraction also when, for example, a certain number of customers come, but some donÕt come to eat. Then she would have to subtract some amount from the original total, to find the correct one. Multiplication comes in handy too. Like, for example, when several people order dishes that have the price, she must multiply the price of one dish by the number of dishes ordered. Also, when she figures out tax, she needs to multiply. For instance, if 5 people order the same dish, she needs to multiply 5 by the tax for one dish, which is, letÕs say, 61 cents, so the total amount of tax would be $3.05. Sometimes, she uses rounding to first estimate the price, but usually adding a the actual numbers is a better way, although it is a slower process. Also, when she pour water into the glass, she has to estimate how much to pour in. Sometimes she uses percentage too. And, of course, she has to use math at the end of the day when she is counting how much she has earned.

The second person, Gan Ouyang, who is a MBA student, uses math in accounting, finance, and statistics courses. He uses just about every kind of math, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, estimation, measurement, and so on. He also must keep track time going from one course to the other. He measures compacity of production, productivity, gains and losses of different companies. When he canÕt measure exactly, he uses estimation.

The third person, Zhang Defu, who is an engineer at Motorola, says engineering requires much math calculations. You need to use math to create computer graphics. He also uses mathematics equations to compress messages. You use addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and other kinds of math. He says you also need integration for digital signal processing. Math is also required to send and receive messages. Sometimes graphs are needed too.

The fourth person, Mrs. Johnson, who is a student teacher, says she uses math in all aspects of her life. She uses math for measurements, for example, she uses tape measure for my sewing. She also uses measuring cups for cooking. She uses math when grading, and she uses math for teaching math.

So, as you can see, every one of these people say that math is very useful and important in daily routines. So math is very important after all!

Mathematician- Uses math to do research. Transfers a physical problem into a mathematical problem then uses different methods of mathematics. Also uses a computer to find a mathematical solution for the problem.

House wife- Measures amounts of ingredients for cooking. Measures amounts of detergents or house hold cleaners to clean the house.

Shopper- When shopping compares price per pound to see which product is a better buy. Also balances checkbook.

Driver- Estimates how long it takes to go down this road or that road.

Someone looking for a job -Uses math to determine which job pays more. Also what times or how long they will be working.

Law school student- Uses math to determine the amount of damages when there is breach of contrast.

Architect- Uses math by designing and planning building by measurements and strength of materials used in the building.

Mom- Lawyer
1.She sometimes counts the money with a sort of calculator.
She also uses math when she pays the people like sometimes she has to know how many people are at her work.

Dad-
2.When he has to grade tests he has to know how many papers he has to grade and how high or low their grades will be on a rubric.

Grandma- Principal
3.She has to know how many report cards to order. Also she needs to know how much supplies to order for the teachers, and how much it will cost the school all together.

Adam- My Swimming Coach
4.He has to know how many people are in his group, and if we go to a swim meet he has to know how many ribbons to get.

Mrs.Johnson-My student teacher
5.She uses math when she is grading and she uses math for teaching math to us.

I went around interviewing people asking how they used math in their jobs. IÕm going to tell you about four of them.

My mommy-Accountant
1. My mom is an accountant. She uses math when she puts paper in the printer, when she is referencing, and when she figures out how much the client is in debt.

Mrs. Johnson-Teacher
2. She uses math when she teaches math to us, and when she grades.

My aunt Rebecca Alvarado-mother to two babies
3. she uses math to make a bottle of powder MILK, AND WHEN SHE IS FEEDING THEM BABY CEREAL.

Mrs. Spooner-the principal
4. she uses math to make sure there's enough seats, and she is making copies of papers that are suppose to go home with everyone in the school.

Where do you use Math on?

=============

Almost every job needs to use math. For an example: A teacher needs to use math for almost everything in her life. She uses math for measurements, like tape measure for sewing, also measuring cups for cooking and uses math for grading and most of all she uses math to teach math.

A mom uses math to cook, like measuring the time to cook or to measure the amount materials to use for that food. And she uses math to sew like, to fold the material to fit. And also to help the kids with math homework. And to plan the times for an example, if we are going to the park at 9:30, we might be there at 10:30, so we can go play at the park at 10:40. She uses math to think about money and compare the prices and also to plan where to use money. And uses math to count her things like the dishes to see if she has everything.

Being a student is having a job too. And there are lots of thing to use math on. My dad and I use math to study math which is one of the school subjects. And to count the days and the times to remember like, if my moms birthday is on the 20th and today is the 12th there are 8 days left. And also to count money. And to count my things.

A waitress uses math on almost everything in her day. She uses math to add the orders from the people and to add the tax. And to count the chair so everybody can have a chair to sit on. And to multiply the things if there are people who ordered the same thing. And to measure the amount of water for the cup.

A banker uses math to count interest and to count expense and to count profit. A banker is a person who has to live at home and use math too. On a lots of things.

There are more people who use math on every thing in there life. And every one of us might have had a time when they had to study and learn math very had. But, math is Very important!

At my dad's office he uses math by how he has to make the computer chips and the procesers by how many mhs to put in or take out. He measures the area of the computer chips or cards.

My uncle sells cars . He has to measure how long he will give the person that bought the car to pay and sign the papers that shows how much they have to pay in each month.

My mom needs to caculate the time to do research for every thing she needs to do and have some time to do other research.

1. Dad, Dentist- My Dad has to figure out how much the patient will pay,he has to figure out how many days between appointments because of lab-work,and he also has to figure out how much money he has to pay his employees.

2. Mom, Student at U.T.-She uses math by collecting data, and doing statistics on them on her dissertation.

3. My Friend's Dad, Sells Cars-He uses math to figure out how much to pay, to figure out how much the accessories on the car, and the taxes.
