My life at the top of the Penha Hill Church Reported by Becky Williams March 22, 1998
Oh, the cool breeze of this nice spring day. I love the feeling of the wind blowing in my face. The everyday scenery that I see is so gorgeous and I don’t mean to be a snob, but I see the most spectacular view off the top of this mountain that I live on. People come everyday to look upon me sitting here gracefully staring over the sea. I sit on the top of the church that sailors came to pray at after their long voyages across the sea. They came after their hard times on the rough sea fighting for their lives to thank the Lord for sparing their life. Sailors also came to pray before they went on long voyages. I like the sailors. If it weren’t for them, I wouldn’t be here. Some Portuguese sailors built me in 1622, after they had just escaped from an attack by the Dutch. My favorite time of year is on May 13th, when the statue of Our Lady of Fatima is carried around Macau and then up to the church. Three children are selected to dress up like three shepherd children named, Francisco, Jacita, and Lucia. The word between us statues it that the Virgin Mary appeared to them. I think that I am the most important thing to the church, just because I tell the people when there are boats coming. I also think that because I am tall, gorgeous and a big part of history. At least that is what I think. |
