Coil Incense

Reported by David Haase
(peninsula of land off southern coast of China)
March 6, 1998

IncenseI feel the heat gradually killing me. The fire creeps up and up. People gawk at me and take a deep whiff of my ashes. Who am I? I am coil incense. People claim I am lucky and bring them tranquillity. I dangle on top of the ceiling, watching the red glow advance.

WorshipIt all started when I was first made at the factory, flammable powdered wood was placed around my body and pasty incense was placed inside me. Then I was shipped to Macau at some place called the A-Ma Temple. When I got there I was horrified. There was incense of my kind already hanging on the walls. That was not the bad part, the bad part was that they were being burned for their smell. I was then taken to a temple and placed on a cardboard box. I just sat on that box relaxing.(I was quite tired from the ship ride to Macau). One day a boy with a HKIS shirt strolled into the room. He started talking to my caretaker. Then I was taken to the boy and was wrapped up. He left the temple and got on this machine which floats on water and was called a "TurboCat". I was taken to his home where I was hung on a balcony. When he took my wrapping off and unveiled me I was astonished. I was more than two feet long. Then the kid took a match and set me on fire. It was complete torture night and day. I overheard the kid talking to his mom, "The man at the temple told me that the coil will last for eight days." Eight days! Eight days of complete torture. So here I am, dangling. I wish there was something to pass the time.
