Two Cemeteries of Macau

A Comparison

By Becky Williams

Two Cemeteries – Similarities and Differences

The Old Protestant Cemetery and the Saint Miguel Catholic Cemetery are very contrasting. At first, I thought that the Catholic Cemetery would be a standard lower then the Protestant cemetery, but I found that they differed significantly in size and wealth.

Protestant Cemetery

The Protestant cemetery had about 40 or 50 tombstones, while the Catholic had several hundred, maybe even a thousand. Most of the graves at the Catholic cemetery had Chinese and Portuguese writing on them, very few had English. I think the graves at the Catholic cemetery were much nicer, even though the Protestant cemetery was nicer to be at because you could read the gravestones. Most had English although some had German on them as well.

Catholic Cemetery

The reason there are two cemeteries is because the Catholics wouldn’t allow the Protestants to be buried at their cemetery. So after that, the Protestants made a small cemetery for themselves. I thought that the Catholics were being stubborn in this way.

I think that the cemeteries were beautiful, even though it was heartbreaking to see all the small children and families’ graves. It was interesting to visit the past!
