Presidents' Day

In the United States we have Presidents' Day when we honor Abraham Lincoln and George Washington. Lincoln's birthday is February 12 and Washington's is February 22. This year President's Day was February 20. We did not have school on that day. I wrote my report about Abraham Lincoln.

Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln was born on Febuary 12,1809 near Hodgenville, Kentucky. Lincoln's Parents were Thomas and Nancy Hanks Lincoln. He self-educated himself. His religon was of no special denomination. He attended a Presbytarian Church during his presidency. His occupation was a lawyer and his political party was a republican. The state he represented was Illinois. He married in 1842 to Mary Todd. Together they had four sons ( two died in childhood and one at age eighteen) Abraham Lincoln died April 15,1865 in Wasington, D.C. He was buried at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfeild, Illinois. Abraham was the sixteenth president from March 14, 1861 to April 15,1865. He was president during the Civil War, and took the firm steps necessary to prevent the North and South from becoming two separate nations. He defined democracy later that year in his famous Gettysburgh Address. He said it should be "goverment of the people, by the people, and for the people." The war was being fought, he said to test whether a nation founded on democratic principles" can long endure." He attended a play at Ford's Theatre in Washinton, D.C. on the evening of April 14, 1865. There he was shot by John Wilkes Booth, a succesful actor half crazed with disappointment because the South had lost. I admire Abraham Lincoln because he was one of the greatest presidents. He stood up for the rights of all man kind; that everybody was equal.
