Patriot's Day
My name is Rebecca Rogers and I'm going to tell you about Patriots day. Here, in Lexington Massachusetts, Patriots Day is a very important holiday. It is important to all of Massachusetts, but it originated in Lexington. It all started in 1775 when the British came to Lexington. Paul Revere went riding through the town to warn every one. Minutemen everywhere rushed out to help. The Minutemen met the Redcoats on the green which is still there today. The British were called Redcoats because they wore red coats. Actually, the entire battle on the green was a mistake. No one was supposed to fire until fired upon, but people believe that a bystander fired a shot which caused the action to start. Shots were being fired everywhere and many Minutemen had fallen dead. Although there were many loses to the Minutemen, they fought hard. The battle was over when the Redcoats finally retreated. Now, we celebrate that holiday by waking up early to go watch a re-enactment of the whole thing. The re-enactment includes everything, even the ride of Paul Revere, and the arriving of the British. Anyone can chose to be in this re-enactment, as long as they can buy the correct uniform. After the re-enactment, there is a parade that runs down the center of town. Many kids organization participate in the parade, such as girl and boy scout troupes, cheerleading squads, bands, and other special groups. Then, in the afternoon, there is another parade. This parade is longer and has more important groups marching in it. These may be groups such as adult bands and Minutemen from other towns. Many other towns also have parades, but the re- enactment takes place in Lexington.
