Earth Day - USA

22 April
Earth Day in South Carolina
Saturday, April 22 was the 25th anniversary of Earth Day. There have been many activities held throughout our area to help celebrate the beauty of our earth. Our school participated in the Earth Day Grocery Bags Project with schools throughout the United States and Canada. One of our local grocery stores donated paper grocery bags to us. Students in all grade levels throughout the school (Four year old kindergarten through fifth grade students) then decorated the bags with images of the earth and slogans about Earth Day. On Friday, we delivered the bags back to the grocery store, along with banners about the store and our school working together for Earth Day. On Saturday, shoppers at our Harris Teeter store were able to receive their groceries in the Earth Day grocery bags decorated by the students of Rosewood. It was a great way to make both the students and the public aware of our need to remember the things we can do to help preserve our earth.
Reduce -----------> Recycle ----------------> Reuse
------------------------------------------------------------- Now, here is a report about another event that my daughter (Kathleen...age 7) attended in honor of Earth Day. This took place at the opening ceremonies for Greenway, a new environmental area located in Fort Mill, South Carolina. Kathleen will tell you about some of the activities they had planned for the day. These are her words:
My Brownie troop and I went to Greenway in Fort Mill for the Earth Day Celebration. Here are some of the things we did on Saturday. We rode horses . My horse was named Stoney and she was fun to ride. We had our faces painted ( with really good paint ) and they painted a peach on our faces. South Carolina is one of the states that grows lots of peaches. They grow them on the Springs Peach Farm in Fort Mill. We did leaf tracings. I traced a big heart shaped leaf and a little one. We played with old fashioned toys like Jacob's Ladder, Grace in Heaven (that was a hoop that went on a two sticks), and dominoes. We watched soldiers shoot their old fashioned types of rifles. They told us that they were not real bullets in the rifles. We watched shows like horse shows and blacksmiths at work. We made fishing poles by ourselves and we fished with worms and crickets. We ate lunches that we brought from home. We walked alot over the grounds that included swinging bridges and hiking trails. -------------------------------------------------------
Next week, our own Museum of York County will continue the Earth Day Celebration with a day of more activities to make everyone more aware of the need to remember the Earth Day slogans every day of the year.
