Fiesta de la Virgen de la Candelaria // Party of the Candelaria Virgin - Peru
by Jose Luis Serruto

1 February

I am Jose Luis Serruto J. but just call me "Pepe", a computer teacher in a private school called "Peruano Británico" in Lima-Peru. We just had Carnival during the first week of February in Puno called "Fiesta de la Virgen de la Candelaria" (Party of the Candelaria Virgin ) this is the most important Carnival party in Peru because Puno is considered "the folk Capital of America" (Capital folclórica de América) because it has over 200 diferents kinds of dances and customs. During this week all the neighborhoods and regions of Puno include Bolivia dance with their typical clothes in every street as you can get, each two blocks you can get a lot of beer, the most of the cases free because some "father in low" are in charge of prepare the drink and the food. The familys prepare typical foods and you can taste it the most of the times are delicious. There is a special day when the principal groups dance into a stadium this is a lovely and amazing moment. The dancer's custom dresses have a religious and magic motive and the most famous thing are the demon masks. Puno is a city located over 4000 meters over the sea level on the shore of Titicaca Lake (the Highest lake in the world) on the South east of Peru, the weather the most part of the year is terrible but when is Carnival time Puno is very crowded, and funny a lot of tourist of diferentes parts of the world came to Puno to enjoy this party, and specially to enjoy the people because we are a warm and friendly country.
