Golden Week - Japan
by Maryland Students, USA

29 April

1 Week

-- The Salisbury, Maryland students asked questions about Golden Week. --

These are the replies:

As for the questions, here are the combined answers from Mika, Mayumi and Wakana:

- What is children's day?

Children's day is supposed to be for children of both gender but in fact the 'koi-nobori' are only for boys. Nobody seems to know why.

- Do kids have off school for Golden Week?

Just the actual days that are holidays: April 29th, May 3, 4, 5.

- What do you do on Constitution Day?

No special ... only holiday.

- Do you play games on the holidays?

No.

- Do you get together with lots of other people to celebrate?

Children in elementary school eat 'kashiwa-mochi' (rice cake) and wear 'kabuto' (a kind of helmet) on Children's Day.

- Don't girls get to have Children Day? Is it just for boys?

So-so ... they have Doll's Festival on March 12th.

- Do the boys fly kites?

No. Only on New Year's Day.

- Mrs. Elder's class
- Timeka, Phillip, Pam, Dedrick,
- East Salisbury School
- Salisbury, Maryland

Golden week consists of three holidays. So it is an anniversary of the foundation on May 2, I have no school on that day. So my Golden week have five holidays. If it is also a holiday on April 30, it is one week day!

By the way, as you said, I think that although May 5 is the "Children's Day",Why it is said "The Boys'Day". When I think about the words deeply, it seems to me that it means Children are only boys. Do you think that I think about it too much? But such a easy thought makes the distinction of men and women.
