Setsubun - Japan
by Dave McLane

3 February

Not mentioned in the posts was the fact that we were all throwing beans at the time including Yuki, who is 2 years 10 months! Her mother brought the beans and we pinned a drawing of an oni (devil) on the back fence and all threw: first at the one ("Oni wa soto!") and then inside the house ("Fuku wa uchi!"). Yuki can only say a few words of English but likes to run Playroom on the Mac. It took some convincing before she should throw them inside (usually a no-no).

As for the beans, well, hmmm, we didn't quite get them all picked so my house is a bit 'crunchy' :-)

Best,
Dave
