Independence Day // Yom Ha'atzmaut - Israel
by Ofri Ilany, Tal Nir

15 April

Independence Day

Here in Israel, we have many special holidays throughout the year, everyone symbolizes a special occasion or tradition of the jewish nation. The hebrew calendar is differnt from the worldwide calendar, and is based on the moon's rotation.

Now I'll tell about Israel's independence day. We celebrate the forming of the state in 1948. We wave the Israeli flag and celebrate together.

We ourselves, Tal and Ofri, are not religious people. we dont follow all the traditions we mentions, but most of them are folk holidays that all the jews celebrate to be united and to remember the past of our nation. It is very nice to have a big variety of customs.

Ofri Ilany and Tal Nir, 9th grade

We are a High School for Environmental Studies, grades 9 - 12, a boarding school for students from all over the country wishing to specialize in this area. We are situated in the Negev (the southern desert region of Israel) about 45 minutes south-west of Beer-Sheva (one of the Israeli cities). The school is situated in Midreshet Ben Gurion, a small settlement.

Hope to hear from you,
David Lloyd, Hannah Sivan
