St. Nicholas Day
- Austria

5 December
They expect the visit from Nicholas in the evening of the 5th December. The parish church of Hall in Tyrol is dedicated to the Nikolaus. The feast of the saint of Nikolaus therefore gets particularly celebrated. Nikolaus hikes followed by angels and devils by our town on the day before of the 6th December.
He takes a golden book at himself. In this book is written whether the children were good during the year. Whether the children were bad is in this book but also made a note. The younger children who still think that sacred Nicholas every Jahr comes to the earth expect longingly his appearance.
The older children disguise themselves as angels and devils around the priest who goes through this one town as Nikolaus accompany.
It has snowed yesterday and today. It becomes therefore signs on be possible that sacred Nicholas can drive with a sled by the town. All little children meet from reverberation at the town place in the evening of the 5th December in front of the church. In a great procession sacred Nicholas, his angels and the devils then move into the town. They are accompanied of the town band which plays Christmassy songs. All children then get little presents at the town place. Since there is not any bad children into reverberation, all children get presents. Neither of the children is taken along by the devils.
If the children are at home they put their boots in front of the door. Sacred Nicholas personally pays a visit to particularly good children. Unfortunately, he doesn't personally have time to go to all children. Children he cannot pay a visit, he puts the presents into the boots.
We have many Christmas customs in Tyrol. There almost is another custom in every village.
Yours sincerely from the snow-covered Tyrol
