Liberty Day - Portugal
by Colégio Vila Fernando

25 April

The difficult situation of the country, dominated by a decrepit and corrupt regime, initiated a protest. This increased the degredation of economic conditions, which were in addition to the already existing world crisis which started in 1973, and overall prolonged the colonial problems. These conditions were responsible for the cause of the revolution of April 25th 1974. This revolution was called the "Revolution of the Nails". It was a peaceful occurrence where the militaries placed nails in the barrels of their shotguns. The 25th of April permitted the re-establishment of the democracy and decolonization. After some politically colvulsine and economically dificult years, Portugal has tried to find the path to stability and progress.
