Postings from Participants of Landmark Game

Students from Kaimuki High School

Dear Mount,

I'm very pleased that you are going to put our picture on the Landmark web page. The students extended the project by bowing up a world map and locating the landmarks which they correctly guessed by using miniature yellow flags. Additionally, they wrote blurbs with basic facts about these landmarks and attached them to the perimeter of the map (not shown in the picture because picture was taken before they did the second part of the assignment). The bulletin board behind Cynthia has all the landmark clues posted. Questions and correctly guessed answers were noted on the clue sheets.

Our school is a public high school 99-12) in urban Honolulu, Hawaii. We are just a stone's throw away from the flagship campus of the University of Hawaii and about a mile from the famed landmark Diamond Head. We have an ethnically diverse student body. The picture depicts our diversity. Cynthia is from Korea but lived in Missouri before coming to Hawaii. The two boys are Vietnamese.

Thank you for a great e-mail game.

Aloha from Hawaii.

>Hi, > I am so disappointed that my connection went awry. You

>Dear Carol,
> >First of all, another big thank-you for running this game! It's a great idea
>and got my students excited about research. It was also our very first

> >I'm sure it was hectic for you, and I hate to add to that, but . . .
> 1) we have yet to receive responses to all of our guesses, some of
>which were sent two weeks ago. I know there's been trouble with our e-mail
>address, so I don't know if that's it. Some of the students have been left
>hanging, so we don't know what our score is.
> 2) Per your request, I will attempt to re-create which schools
>correctly guessed our clues. Unfortunately, I didn't keep "paper track" as I
>responded electronically and reported immediately. Sorry.

>As you already know our land mark - do you need any other information?
>We will be gald to help!

>BTW - do you have plans to play this game next year too? in what part of
>the year? I try to think how it will fit one of the classes ;-)

>Thanks again, Hannah

>Dear Carol,
>Do you want us to resubmit our answers to the participating schools or wait
>and see if they will respond to your request. To date, LoneRock school from
>Stevensville answered our landmark correctly first. Then we received replies
>from your school and another school in Pa that we had trouble emailing too.
>I'll have to look when I get to school and check on that participant. I
>did finally answer them from the project board because I kept receiving a
>failed message reply in my mailbox.
> I hope you will do this next year. My class enjoyed the challenge and
>we believe that we successfully answered about 12 correctly although we only
>heard replies from 2 schools. We had trouble getting all of the clues sorted
>out the first week and a half but did better after that. I feel more confident
>to try this again another time. Thanks for the challenge.

>Dear Carol,

>Thanx for the partial data! I am at home (my 11 yr old broke her elbow
>last night at gymnastics :-(.....), and if we correctly guessed any of
>the missing ones, I'll let you know tomorrow. I left that folder at

>Have a good day. Thank you again for the *great* job you have done on
>this. I would like to do it again next year. You would be great at it!

>Warm regards, >Barbara > >

>Dear Carol,
> >We like the game it's great ! We hope to collect all the clues and
>try them out again because we were having our vacation at the peak of
>the game. We do not want to miss the fun.

>We hope you have received our previous emails regarding our
>landmark. Anyway, we will let you know again because we see that in
>your answer key there was a blank against SMBB.

>Our landmark is "DATARAN MERDEKA, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia".

>Thank You for organizing the game.
