<A-johnOst> bye
<A-johnOst> hi barb
<A-johnOst> yoo hoo
<A-Barb> hi john - you weren't here so we were working
<A-Barb> we read the log from the session with denmark
<A-Barb> This is our latest rewrite of the 7 paragraphs:
<A-Barb> "Oh No! My bookbag dropped off the ten foot bridge.
<A-johnOst> i'm listening and ooking
<A-johnOst> cooking
<A-Barb> I was so excited about the trip I must have dropped it.
I must have grabbed my dad's formula. I knew it wasn't my handwriting but
I was in a rush. I will be grounded for a month!
<A-Barb> That's it so far--
<A-johnOst> So is the bag drifting away?
<A-Barb> now we have agreed with denmark to change it to a seagull
*** A-Barb is now known as rhea
<A-johnOst> Is a seagull picking it up?
<rhea> yeah
<A-johnOst> What do you htink kids? Do you want ot do anything ot
the first paragraph or is just right?
<A-johnOst> ot=to
<rhea> demark said that there should be oil on the tail & it
picks upp the paper
<rhea> by sticking to the tail
<A-johnOst> you mean it picks up the bag?
<rhea> maybe we could compromise let chessie take the baackpack,
meet a seagull with oil on its tail
<A-johnOst> Personally, ...
<A-johnOst> I like chessie
<rhea> no the seagull has oil on its tail and a paper gets stuck
<A-johnOst> this is complicated ... how does the paper get out of
the bag?
<rhea> chessie swings it around and paper flys out
<A-johnOst> Have you kids ever heard of a pandora box?
<rhea> yeah
<A-johnOst> the book bag is kind of like that box ...
<rhea> what do you mean
<A-johnOst> inside it could have a formula ... a map ... and OTHER
clues
<rhea> i like that idea
<A-johnOst> So, it is important for the bad to be carried osmewhere
<rhea> amap to...?
<A-johnOst> bad=bag
<A-johnOst> why not?
<A-johnOst> But that can be in the future
<rhea> to where?
<rhea> ok
<A-johnOst> Don't worry right now
<A-johnOst> since the bag can contain many items we can always explain
why they were there when we need to
<rhea> our next paragragh should be about what
<A-johnOst> "Oh No! My bookbag dropped off the ten foot bridge.
<A-johnOst> > i'm listening and ooking
<A-johnOst> > cooking
<A-johnOst> <A-Barb> I was so excited about the trip I must have
dropped it. I must have grabbed my dad's formula. I knew it wasn't
my handwriting but I was in a rush. I will be grounded for a month!
<A-johnOst> Now the words are in fornt of us again
<A-johnOst> What are the good questions any reporter asks?
<rhea> so were do we want to go from there
<rhea> who were when wher what
<A-johnOst> and WHY
*** rhea is now known as Caprice
<A-johnOst> who is on the bridge? Where exactly are we? Did we answer
why we were there?
<A-johnOst> So now let's thinking of htis as an opening scene with
several paragraphs
<A-johnOst> Barb: let's chat ab it after
<A-johnOst> a bit
<Caprice> It could be on the docks of Annapolis
<A-johnOst> Now, you all must make final decisions ...
<A-johnOst> As editors go back and get people to agree:
<A-johnOst> where is htis taking place?
<A-johnOst> Why?
<A-johnOst> Who is up on that bridge? what is his or her name?
<A-johnOst> Fill in hte blanks a bit ...
<A-johnOst> Take your time talking baout the formula ...
<A-johnOst> Maybe Dad runs to the bridge discovering it is gone
<A-johnOst> AND we "think" it is inside ...
<A-johnOst> Can't know till we get the bag back
<Caprice> We'll print this log out and share it with the class
<A-johnOst> I'll be here Thursday if Ms Barbara has the time
<A-johnOst> So we can work and move the stry along
<Caprice> 9AM
<A-johnOst> if that is good
<A-johnOst> fine with me
<Caprice> yes
<A-johnOst> great .. its a date
<A-johnOst> :-)
*** Caprice is now known as A-Barb
<A-Barb> no meeting on Fri with denmark
<A-johnOst> I know
<A-Barb> ok see you thurs
<A-johnOst> I want ot make a suggestion for you
<A-Barb> ok
<A-johnOst> have time or should I e-mail?
<A-Barb> now is ok
<A-johnOst> Okay
<A-johnOst> You should htink about developing a continuous story
with your kids which is totally hteir idea
<A-johnOst> what I mean is that we can have a collab with other
schools on the basic idea of a story
<A-johnOst> But I don't want your kids feeling like they write the
opening nad now the story has been passed off
<A-Barb> ok so don't change chessie?
<A-johnOst> I think we can a central plot and each school can work
out its own answer
<A-Barb> i agree -
<A-Barb> so we do chessie, then denmark can change it into a seagull
<A-johnOst> I'm saying that if politics requires it there can be
a seagulkl opening but hte kids should htink through their chessie plot
and then go to denmark and solve the mystery
<A-johnOst> Yes .... there can be many versions of a similar story
<A-johnOst> if we gain agreement and can do the opening together
... wondwerful
<A-johnOst> if each age group and class needs its own story that
can work too
<A-johnOst> I think your kids are working hard
<A-Barb> ok, so we will continue as is..
<A-johnOst> We can think about compromises and teach them that skill
<A-johnOst> but in your class ... they can really do osme wonderful
mythology and legend with chessie
<A-johnOst> and use other sea monsters around the world to inform
about world geography, social studies, history, etc
<A-johnOst> I think dumping chessie has htrown them a bit
<A-Barb> ok will go back to chessie
<A-johnOst> I like chessie ... I can see her carrying the strap
in her mouth and heading east
<A-Barb> a she?
<A-johnOst> Your kids need to develop what has happened here in
MD and why we must chase down chessie
<A-johnOst> he
<A-johnOst> I never know monster sex
<A-johnOst> The bag should hold many clues
<A-johnOst> formula ... map to some secret place that the formula
is needed
<A-Barb> ok - we need to go - will work on continuing this story
<A-johnOst> okay ... hope I'm helping
<A-Barb> see you thurs at 9AM- yes much
<A-Barb> bye
<A-johnOst> bye
