Sample Journal and Timeline

Sample Journal

7:00--- Oh..my alarm clock is so loud. It reminds me that a new day is here. I get our of bed and get ready for the school. I just remembered! We are doing a special activity in Science. I think I will like today.

8:00---I am on the school bus with my friends. Would you believe I left my lunch on the kitchen table? How could I be so dumb?

9:00---Now it is time for art class. I *love* art! My teacher says I have real talent. I'm making a clay pot for my mom for her birthday. I know she'll love it.

----and on and on----for the rest of the day until sleep time.

Project Purpose:

For students:

By sharing activities taking place on the specified day, students will be able to see how other students around the world spend their day. They will gain new friends from around the world.

For teachers:

Teachers will be able to use this activity across many curriculum areas:

Writing--Students will jot down quick notes on their hour but will later weave these notes into interesting journal entries.

Math--Students can analysis the data in each journal by making graphs and charts.

1) What is the average time students around the world:

 do homework?

 watch TV?

 do family chores?

 awaken each morning?

 go to sleep each night?

2) Who spends more time watching TV? boys? girls?

3) Who studies longer? Which country? boys? girls?

4) What classroom subjects are favorites?

5) Time zone activities:

EXAMPLE--When Maria is doing homework in Peru at 19:00 what is Melanie doing in New Zealand?

Science and Social Studies--

  1. Locate each school (or entry) by city and country on the map.

  2. Discuss latitude and logitude.

  3. Identify the season of the year for each country. (We hope to have participants from the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.)
  4. Discuss the social differences between countries -or- even between cities of the same country
