A day in the life of news - January 7, 1997

Description:

On Tuesday, January 7, 1997, students from around the world will post the headlines and a brief summary of the major news in their area.

Choosing the news items:

Before hand students should look at/read/listen to their local media and decide what they think the top news stories are for that day. (Please use only local news services and not international ones.) They might look at what items get the most coverage, where the item appears in the newspaper or broadcast, etc.

Posting the information:

This is a joint project of KIDPROJ and SNUNEWS (www6.snunit.k12.il) Please try and post your information within the week following January 7th.
All information is to be posted to the KIDPROJ mailing list. Please read our KIDPROJ QUICK-START to find out how to subscribe to the mailing list.

In addition, information can be posted to: SNUNEWS@WWW1.HUJI.AC.IL as this is a joint project!

Analyzing the data:

All participants are encouraged to analyze the data and post their conclusions back to the project list. Some suggestions for analyzing the data:

  • what kind of news items were posted: international interest, local, etc.? what news was in common from place to place?
  • what were students expectations? Did they expect the top news items to be the same? different?
  • what were the most common news stories? least common? most unusual? most interesting?
  • why do they think certain types of news appear in certain places? (role of geography, politics, natural environment, etc.)
  • what did you learn?
