Ann Carlson
Majestic School
My name is Anne Carlson. I have taught for eighteen years at Majestic Way Elementary School in the northeast corner of San Jose, California. Our school of about 600 students is quite a mixture of ethnicities. In my present classroom I have fifteen students who are of Asian descent (which include Vietnamese, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Cambodian, and Indian), five Hispanic, four Black, one Native American, and eight of various European descent.
Fifteen of my students have English as their second language.
I work in a Pod of three classrooms. In the classes of our Pod we have 80 fourth and fifth graders -15 of whom are special education students. We won an educational grant last spring and now have 18 Pentium PCs to "surf the net". We are just getting started this year and have not begun our Family History Project. Our research unit is based around the theme of "Passport to California". We will have the students studying not only their own family history of travel to our state, but also have them finding about their country or state of origin. Reading, writing, language, research, editing, and technology skills will be incorporated together into a cooperative, cross grade level, and special education mainstreaming group efforts by the children.
We are slated to begin this unit at the beginning of October. In the meantime, I will have the students introduce themselves by answering the four questions for KIDROOTS.
Say, how would you suggest we send our information on 80 students without sending 80 e-mails??? Are we able to attach a file? I'll need some help on this one. Please be patient with us.
Thanks,
