LETTER OF INTRODUCTION
Raffles Girls' School (Secondary), Singapore
Hello! This is Jocelyn Huang from Singapore. I'm working alone on this
project. I tried asking my friends to join me but they were too busy
studying, so I forgot about it. Now, I'm going to tell you about my school,
Singapore and me.
My school's full name is Raffles Girls' School (Secondary),
Singapore. The web address is http://www.rgs.edu.sg. I'm
including a picture of my school badge. It was from my
school's homepage. We offer Secondary 1 up to
Secondary 4, when they take the Cambridge 'O' levels. I'm
14 and in Secondary 2 myself. Secondary 1 is USA Grade 7,
and Secondary 2 is USA Grade 8, and so on. The school
was founded by Sir Stamford Raffles. He was the founder
of modern Singapore. We are an all girls' school, and
our brother school is Raffles Institution, which is a boys' school. Our
principal is Mrs Carmee Lim, and she's a real dear! She's around 50 but
looks 40! Word has it that she used to be a gymnastics teacher. Our school
motto is "Filiae Melioris Aevi", which means "Daughters of a Better Age".
There are about 1700 students in our school. I'm in the Gifted Programme
and my class has 20+ students, but the other classes have about 40 students
each.
Every student has to take at least one extra-curricular activity (ECAs),
and I take 2. My ECAs are Chinese Orchestra and Media and Resources Club
(everyone calls it AVA Club, AVA standing for audio-visual aids). I used to
be in the String Ensemble, but I quit because I couldn't handle *that* much
work. I play the cello for the Chinese Orchestra. The school colours are
black, green and white, which were the colours of the coat-of-arms of Sir
Stamford Raffles. The school is divided into 5 houses. Tarbet is red,
Buckle is green, Richardson is blue, Waddle is yellow and Hadley is purple.
The houses were named after previous principals. I'm in Hadley house. The
champion house of this year was Richardson (as usual). I chose Hadley
because I like purple. But most of the times you don't get to choose your
house.
Enough about my school! Here's a bit about Singapore. Singapore was
supposedly named after a lion which a Sumatran prince called Sang Nila
Utama saw when he was hunting. He thought it was a good omen and decided to
settle here. When Sir Stamford Raffles arrived at Singapore in 1819, he
made this into a bustling British free port, and Singapore has stood fast
against 177 years. Today, Singapore is still as hectic, humid and hot as
ever. It's also famous for its tourist attractions. If you ever come to
South-East Asia, you must come to Singapore.
Thanks for reading this! See you!
Luv from,
Jocelyn Huang.
