A Trip to Flowers and Petals
GEAR School, Bangalore, India
In the morning I was waiting for the school bus. My mother was with me.
The bus came and picked me up. As we travelled I drew the road map.
In the farm I saw beautiful trees, flowers and leaves. We played
football and Kho-kho. Then we all sat down for an interview with Mr Palanivelu, the owner of the farm.
We had softdrink. I started to write. I saw a Blue Jay. I saw it flying.
It had a black and white pattern on its wings. I saw an Acalifa and Poincitta plant which had bright red leaves. I heard uncle say that Cycus plant is very expensive, like Rs 10,000 for one plant! I saw a
shoe flower; it was yellow in colour. - Abhinav A POEM:
Air is everywhere filled with butterflies flying,
dogs idling and women cooking.
The boys are working in the field
But the rain is about to come.
We all sit around and eat chips.
We play in the garden.
We all write poems.
The dog is sniffing our dress.
The butterflies are flying
and the boys are working.
- Husna Interview with Mr Palanivelu It was an informal air filled with fresh air, rich fragrance and
inquisitive questions. Mr Palanivelu was a sport and he found time to tak to us. Nithin: What inspired you to name your farm ;Floers and Petals'?
PV: I deal with flowers and petals. Moreover I am a horticulturalist and
my interests are flowers and petals. Abinav: Uncle, why did you choose nelamangala for your farm?
PV: This place is away from the city and the soil here is good. Kishen: What is the total area of the farm?
PV: It is around five acres. Abhinav; Do you adopt new methods of farming?
PV: Yes, of course. We tissue culture and different cross pollinated
plants are imported and we export quite a few of our plants. Abhinav: How are the plants irrigated?
PV: The plants are irrigated by the pipe-lines and it is called drip
irrigation.
Sunny: What are your future plans?
PV: I want to propagate more varieties and species of plants.
Sunny: How do you control the pests?
PV: We spray chemicals on the leaves and the soil to prevent infection
to the plants. Nithin: How do manage to have these many varieties of plants?
PV: I love plants and wherever I go I collect them and try to experiment
with them in my farm!
