Mandeville
Tchefuncte Middle School, Mandeville, Louisana, USA
Mandeville is a wonderful place to live because of the beautiful nature, the very
interesting history and diversified population and traditions. Mandeville has
a great lake, pristine rivers and swampy bayous as its borders. Lake Pontchartrain,
a brackish lake, is very smooth, beautiful, calm and entertaining for people who
like water sports. The Tchefuncte River has a plentiful amount of plants and
wildlife, which makes exquisite scenery for boaters and visitors. Mandeville, Louisiana
has a lot of marvelous things like beautiful bayous, lovely lakes, and our wildlife is
interesting too. Mandeville's environment is known for its tall pine trees, magnificent
magnolias, round oaks and flowering azaleas. Mandeville has no mountains but has
a lot of ferns, Spanish moss, armadillos and birds. Some other animals in and around
the area are; alligators (our school mascot), snakes of many different kinds, slimy
frogs, silly squirrels, rambunctious raccoons and polite opossums, dashing deer,
flopping fish, soaring eagles, and hovering hawks.
Mandeville, which is located on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain, was founded by
Bernard de Marigny de Mandeville, in 1840. He settled on his gigantic Fountainbleau Plantation, which later became part of our town and a state park. Bernard de Marigny de Mandeville was a local legislator who often gambled for high stakes and often lost
his pay. Arthur E. Qullieer built the popular steamboat, The Camellia, that carried
passengers from New Orleans to their summer homes in Mandeville. Further back in
our local history we find that the Tchefuncte Indians occupied the area in and around
Mandeville, from 600 B.C. to 400 A.D., as identified by the artifacts found in the shell
mounds. Our school is named after these native people.
We have a multicultural population because of the many explorers, types of
governments and cultural groups that had settled our area in the past. In February,
we dress in marvelous costumes and catch colorful beads and toys from passing
Mardi Gras floats. Many people are moving to Mandeville to live because we have
a safe town, excellent schools, and our parents work in the area. Mandeville is a
wonderful place to live because of the beautiful scenery and nature, the interesting
and colorful history and traditions, and diversified population.
