Memorial Stadium
Cedar Hollow School, Grand Island, Nebraska, USA
In the early years, Nebraska's football team had a lot of
nicknames like Old Gold Knights, Rattlesnake Boys, and Bugeaters. Yuck!
The team was first called "Cornhuskers" in 1899. Charles "Cy" Sherman,
the sports editor of the Nebraska State Journal at that time, used the
name. Memorial Stadium was named to honor the Nebraskans who served in
the Civil War and Spanish-American War. There were 751 Nebraskans. The
construction was completed i a few more than 90 working days. Memorial
Stadium was dedicated on October 20, 1923.
On game days in Lincoln, people are driving 2 mph in town. The
highways are packed, and everyone wants to get in the game. There are
different colors of cars. The parking is hard in Lincoln by the stadium.
When the games are out of town, it is harder to get to the game because
people have to work in LIncoln.
When you walk into the stadium, it will say UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA
in big red letters. Then you walk up ramps and down ramps to your section
of seats. Then you have to find the row of seats. When you're trying to
find your seat, there are little different colored numbers so you can find
where you sit. If you need to go to the bathroom, you would have to wait
in a long line if you are a woman. When you are in your seat, it is
crowded. If your're little, when people stand up and cheer, you cannot
see a thing. You hope you don't have to sit in the sun or behind somebody
that is tall. If you have a seat at the way top, when you look down, it
looks like the players are very tiny.
It is very exciting when the Huskers take the field and the crowd
comes to their feet and starts clapping. You can hardly hear the music
over the crowd. You can also feel the vibrations when the players hit
each other. When the band starts playing the fight song, the crowd comes
to their feet and starts clapping and yelling, "Go Big Red."
When you sit in Memorial Stadium, you see bright, vibrant,
hypnotizing, red and white colors. There are little girls, six-years-old
and under, with pom-poms cheering on the team. When it is raining,
everyone is using ponchos and umbrellas. At half-time the band plays, and
the cheerleaders entertain you while the team is taking a break. After
half-time, the players rush onto the field. When the team makes a good
play, Lil' Red and Herbie Husker, the mascots, jump for joy. Husker
Vision, big TV's, allow you to see instant replays, and you can see which
person gets picked for Husker Trivia. In Memorial Stadium there are many
rowdy fans. We hope you get to come sometime. It's a bunch of Husker
fun.
At Memorial Stadium the popcorn tastes buttery, salty, cheesy, and
greasy. The best kind of popcorn is mouthwatering. It depends on the
person if it is best salty or buttery, but to us B.J. and Cassie, buttery
is best. The pop at the stadium is good unless the kind is the one you
don't like. Sometimes it's watery and that is gross, but that's our
opinion. The fizz is a waste of money, unless they let it go down and
fill it up full again. Burritos at the stadium are good but sometimes
bad. The best to me, B.J., is the crusty and beany kind. Cassie doesn't
like them. You can also smell the hot dogs. They smell tasty, grilled,
good, and much more. The hot dogs are turkey franks. You can smell the
delicious cheese and other tasty ingredients on the pizza. The pizza
comes from Val's. Then people buy it at the stadium. Val's is one of the
best pizzas, we think.
