Through Our Eyes - Stadium High School
By Stephen Gorham
Stadium High School is located in Tacoma overlooking Commencement Bay. The
school was built to be a hotel. Due to a fire after it was built the
building was renovated and was bought by the school district of Tacoma
around 1895. The district began to use it as a high school and still does
to this day. The school looks like a castle which was built in the French
chateau style. The high school has some unusual features. They have a pool
which is used by the Stadium swim team. The unusual thing about the pool is
that it is underground. The pool is accesible by a flight of stairs which
goes underneath the ground to the pool. Another unusual feature is the
Stadium Bowl. It is used for sports events and the bowl has view of the bay
and the city. The bowl used to be "Old Widow's Gulch." But around 1900 the
gulch was bought by the school. It was cleared and was renovated into a
football stadium and is the playing arena for the football games, other
sports events, plus many other events. Many famous people have visited the
Stadim Bowl including Warren G. Harding, Babe Ruth and others. Today
Stadium is a high school with a student population of over 1,800. The
school is a famous landmark in our city.
Stadium High School

Stadium is one of the closest high schools in the area and one of the most
unusual schools in the district. One of the most unusual things about
Stadium High School is it use to be a hotel. It looks like a large castle.
It is slitely dirty, but is a great school. The entrance to Stadium is over
a pool that they no longer use, but they have put in another one. Every
year the graduation ceremonies are held at the Tacoma Dome. The football
field they use is highly very different, it faces the bay and is almost
like a big hole in the ground.
The student there are generally good kids, but lately there have been some
serious disturbances. One of the teachers was a rob by two students while
he was carrying money that was supposed to go towards after school
activities. There was also a bomb scare, as one kid clammed to know where a
bomb was. The entire school evacuated on to the football field. After the
police checked the area they found nothing and all students returned to
learning. The Home Coming Dance was almost canceled because the teachers
were worried about fights. The dance still continued and there were no
fights. Just to add the theme for the dance was "The Beach Under the
Sandcastle Dance.
To conclude, with all it's problems Stadium is still a great school and I
can't wait till I go their next year.

Stadium High School is located over Comencement Bay. It has the
only football stadium that is built so that the top is level with the
ground. Most of the Meeker students will go to Stadium. The pool is
located under the basement. At Stadium they have six classes per day five
days per week.
Stadium is six stories tall. It was a hotel before it was a high
school. Stadium looks like a cathedral that was built centuries ago. It
currently has grades 9-12 in it. Eighth graders must get a passing grade
in all classes in order to go to the Stadium.
