PreWriting
For our prewriting, I asked the students to describe a place they were
familiar with, a place they like to be, and I asked them to be as expressive
and descriptive as possible. Many chose to write about home or a vacation
spot.

Places...from the students:
My name is Alex and I live in Pittsford. It's a small town outside
of Rochester, NY. It is cold in the winter, hot in the summer, chilly in
the fall, and perfect in the spring. My house is in a huge neighborhood,
but there are not many kids my age. In Pittsford we have movie theaters
and music shops and malls and a lot more. We hosted the '96 Ryder Cup and
in Rochester there is the Kodak building. I have lots of friends in school
and a few outside of school. I love music and movies. I play the guitar,
the saxophone, the piano, the drums, and the clarinet. I love to act and I
love the Godfather, Bonnie and Clyde, and Tommy Boy.

I live in Tobey Estates at 4 Split Rock Road. Tobey Estates is a
fairly large neighborhood. About one hundred homes are there. The weather
here in Rochester is fairly warm in the summer; the temperature ranges from
70-90 degrees. In the winter it can be very cold; the average temperature
is from 10-45 degrees, but sometimes it can be 60 degrees on one day and be
5 degrees the next. The houses in my neighborhood are very nice; some are
big and some are middle sized. My house is pretty big, it is white with
black shutters. The air in the fall is crisp, the air smells very fresh and
it makes the inside of your nose get cold when you breath in. The air always
smells fresh. It never smells like pollution and I'm happy about that. I
live in Pittsford, New York. That is a suburb of Rochester. I chose to
write about my neighborhood and my house because it is a very special place
to me.

When I look out my window, I see my back yard. My back yard has a
garden in it, but it is beginning to die. The best thing about the weather
here is in the winter we can walk to our sidewalk, which is shoveled, and
dig snow tunnels through the snow. The weather here is usually very cold,
and the heat in the summer does not last very long. It is not very loud
where I live. It is actually very peaceful. I have many friends in the
neighborhood, and we like to play football and basketball. I think that the
thing that I like to do most is play basketball.

I live in East Rochester. East Rochester is a peaceful place,but
where I live there's a drainage pond. It use to be pretty clear, but some
one ran a cart full of groceries into it. Now its brown. It also has many,
many, many, many toads which my sister likes to collect. I live in a
neighborhood; my house is three stories high. When I look out my window I
see another house.

My name is Ajay. I live in Pittsford, NY which is a suburb of
Rochester NY. I live in a very beautiful neighborhood. With a lot of trees.
The summers are very hot and the winters are extremely cold. We have had
many blizzards and ice storms. My house has two stories with a gigantic
basement. Where I live it is very peaceful. Most of what we hear is the
birds, the squirrels and the deer. When I look outside my bedroom window, I
see the road called Great Oak Lane. In the spring we have many flowering
trees. We have a dogwood and a weeping cherry. All the other trees are very
large ashes. One thing I'd like you to know about Harley is that it is a
private school and there are 26 kids in the whole sixth grade.

My name is Allie. I live in Pultneyville, New York. It is a small
and quiet town on the shores of Lake Ontario. Pultneyville has a harbor, a
beach, two churches, the country warehouse, and a very, very, very small
post office. The town route is in the shape of a triangle.
There are three streets connecting the triangle: Jay Street,
Hamilton Street and Mill Street. I have a very big brick house on Mill
Street. Since I live on the lake the weather is a bit cooler in the summer
than in Rochester. I go to a Reformed Church. It was just renovated. They
added a new upstairs and downstairs. Everyone was really excited when it was
done.
It is fairly quiet on a regular day. My house is very big considering
the sizes of some other houses. We have a pool, a barn, a very big back yard
with a creek, and a concrete driveway where we rollerblade, bike and just
play. Our next door neighbors have two kids: Veronica, 9, and Chris, 7.
They play in our driveway and our backyard all the time which is all right.
There are not many kids my age or ones that I like, but there are some that
are very nice.

Hi, I'm Sabina Barbur. I come from England. My town is BERKHAMSTED.
I live on Graemesdyke Road, Berkhamsted . It has lots of schools and shops.
The town is small, but it is bigger than a village . There are lots of
people and friends. My house has a big garden. My bedroom is on the top
floor. My house is three stories high. Near our house there are three
leisure centres.
Sabina
On The Shore Of Keuka Lake
I chose this place because out of all the places in Rochester, I had
the most fun there. The Keuka Lake is one of the Finger Lakes in New York
State. The Finger Lakes are long narrow lakes and there are five of them.
It is a great place for tubing, water skiing and wind surfing. It is warm
and welcoming. Everyone forgets their troubles and enjoy themselves. The
weather is always smiling. Once you get there you don't want to leave.

Hello! My name is Kathryn Babin and I live in the town of Penfield,
the city of Rochester, the county of Monroe and the state of New York. I
will be telling you about my house in the spring. In the spring my house
seems to come alive. I live in the country and on the top of a hill. As
you drive up the road all you see are many trees. There is a patch of land
and a cornfield. As you arrive at the top of the hill you will see an old
wheel barrow filled with bright red and yellow flowers. My red barn is very
large and sits on the peek of the hill. You must be careful as you drive up
the crooked rock driveway. Now the old garage comes into view. It is painted
red too. At this point my dog will come out to greet you. Be warned, she
loves to jump! Sometimes one of my three cats will wander up to the car.
If you look to the right, you will see a tall gray house. It has one very
tall section and that has four windows on it. The two top windows are my
bed room windows. The two bottom windows are the dining room windows and they
have white blinds. Then there are two smaller sections. The one on the left
is the bathroom and the one on the right is the living room. On the right
section there is a red porch with a green vine growing from it. On the large
section in the middle there is also a red porch with a white rocking chair.
There is a red brick sidewalk leading up to the house. When it reaches the
house, there is a branch that swerves in a half circle around our garden.
Our garden is like the icing on the cake. It is right in front of the house
with many different colored daffodils. There are also red tulips. The lawn
in front of it is about twenty by forty feet. There are two huge trees. On
the other side of the sidewalk is a lawn a little bit smaller. It has a very
large tree on it, too, which covers the lawn with shade. There is a deck
attached to the to the left section of the house. On the deck is a hot tub.
This is only a small part of our land. There is a pool, a vegetable garden,
a tree swing and a huge field looking out at the many cornfields that cover
the land.
