PreWriting
Dear participants of Though Our Eyes,
We are a sixth grade class of 29 students in Jeffersontown,
Kentucky. Our school. St. Edward, has over 530 students in grades K-8.
Our 6th, 7th and 8th grades make up St. Edward Middle School. We are a
very active school with a great library, computer program, music
program and P.E. classes. Our school participates in Young Authors,
Book Bee, Mock Trial, Quick Recall, Spelling Bees, etc. This is in
addittion to our vast athletic program. We have about 18 teams in
grades 3-8 trying to find time to practice in our gym.
We are located in a suburb of Louisville, Kentucky, home of the
Kentucky Derby. Kentucky is known for fast horses and the greastest
horse race in the world-the Kentucky Derby. The Kentucky Derby
Festival, of which the Derby is the climax, is a big part of our
community's life during late April and early May. The Derby Festival
includes "Thunder Over Louisville" (one of the world's largest
fireworks displays), the Pegasus Parade, the Great Steamboat Race, a
hot air balloon race with dozens of beautiful colorful balloons,
marathon races, and numerous other races, chow wagons (a kind of big
party), concerts, basketball games, and fantastic parties with
celebrities and guests from all over the world. Since the hub of all
these festivities is the Derby itself, we've chosen the home of this
great horse race--Churchill Downs--as our location to describe.
As we work on this descriptive writing, we will be communicating
with you again. Please keep us posted on where you are and what your
class is like.
